Kerridges

Rather sadly, Kerridges in Needham Market ceased trading on the 7th October after more than 100 years. Does anybody have any recommendations for garages in Suffolk that know about MGFs? I can do most bits myself but occasionally I am beaten and need to hand it over to someone with better equipment t...

Oil temperature sensor

I was doing some pre-MOT checks today and decided to plug in my pscan to see if there were any faults recorded. It had low battery (expected because it went flat in the winter) and oil temperature sensor. The oil temperature sensor had an asterisk saying some models only. The pscan could read the oi...

Does anyone know if a Brompton folding bike will fit in the boot of an MGF?

Re: Misfire

I forgot to add the MAP sensor to the list of things I have already replaced. The lambda sensor was fitted by the garage when it failed the MOT. It doesn't look like a really cheap one but I don't know if it's a genuine Rover one. I am thinking it might be best to get a genuine one and see what happ...

Re: Misfire

Yes, when I got home the water temperature was 86C and the oil was 90C. I left it idling and the water temperature rose until the fan came on at around 104C and then fell. So far i've fitted new coils, HT leads, water temperature sensor, inlet air temperature sensor, throttle position sensor and spa...

Misfire

I finally had another chance to investigate my misfire on my '96 VVC at the weekend. As before I drove about 20 miles with the car running perfectly, happily revving to over 6500 rpm. I got home just as it started misfiring and it got progressively worse as I left it idling and the temperatures rose...

Re: Erratic running

I usually do check connections (i'm an electrical engineer), however this sensor is easy to see but hard to reach so I thought I'd get a replacement so I only had to do the job once.

Re: Erratic running

I have been struggling with similar problems on my '96 VVC. When the engine was cold and for about the first 15 miles or so, it wasn't too bad. At higher revs and wider throttle it seemed fine but if I got stuck in traffic the car was almost undriveable. If I stopped the engine for 10 minutes it wou...

Re: Misfire

Thanks for the ideas RobboMC? I will check the plugs as suggested. A previous owner had covered the coil packs in silicone sealant. I had to peel it off when I changed the HT leads. It makes me wonder if one of them has a crack. The whole car was dripping with condensation before I took it out at th...

Misfire

I've been having all sorts of fun and games with my 1996 VVC recently. The problems started with an intermittent 1500rpm idle that could temporarily be cured by doing a TPS reset. I suspected the TPS and also discovered that the bearings in the original plastic throttle body were rough, so I bought ...

Re: Washer jets

The original MG jets on mine didn't work well, so I fitted genuine Peugeot jets. I found that all the original pipework and the tank was full of slime. The Peugeot jets worked very well once the pipework was clear. You probably could clean the pipe but it's so cheap it hardly seems worth the effort.

Re: Best place to get gear oil

I got my MTF 94 oil from Rimmers. Not the cheapest but at least I know it's the right stuff. Make sure you can get the filler plug undone before you undo the drain plug! I had a devil of a job undoing mine and took the tops of my knuckles when it finally let go. The filler plug is not very acc...

Your gauge is working correctly. I'm not sure how it works but it "remembers" the position.

Re: New member - Any MGF friendlies nearby?

Hi Barneyrubble,

Try Kerridges in Needham Market if you need service and repair work, or just some parts or advice. They are still MG dealers and they always have a lot of interesting sports cars to see when you visit (Nobles, TVRs etc. as well as MGs).

Re: A Few Small Problems!

I have a '96 F, so similar to yours. 1) Normal. 2) The LED should flash quickly when the car is locked and after about a minute it should start flashing once per second (timings from memory so may not be accurate). 3) ??? Very odd. Needs investigation... 4) The last time mine started randomly idling...

Re: engine fan

Try your meter on the 2K range. Mine measured 130 Ohms which would show 0.13 on your meter on the 2K range.

Your values certainly appear to be in the same range as my assumed to be bad sensor. My new sensor has now been dispatched so if I'm lucky I'll get it tomorrow.

Re: engine fan

I had exactly the same problem for the last couple of weeks and then the under bonnet over temperature warning light came on. Disconnecting the sensor will stop the fan when the ignition is off but it runs all the time the ignition is on. The warning light stays on when the sensor is disconnected. A...

Re: Could engine vibration cause diagnostics protocol failur

Is it just one car that has this problem or are you seeing the same thing on other VVCs? I reckon it's more likely to be electrical noise causing the problem. Try putting a ferrite on the data cable and see if it helps. Get a full turn through the ferrite if you can. If I leave my mobile phone on th...
