Re: where to get Hydragas pumped up ????
Easy check for gas loss from the suspension units is to push the corners of the car down. If there is no movement and the corners feel solid, you have no gas in your hydragas units and they need regassing. Pumping up the suspension on a car in that condition to restore the ride height is a waste of ...

Re: Will using higher RON or Super Unleaded fuel help my car?
I see that we have a few posters ignoring the initial post and claiming that there car feels better with the higher octane fuel, so they will continue to use it. Well lets put that to the test. Run the car till it is low on fuel and then get a friend to fill it up for you. They will randomly pick no...

Re: ride height
As the previous poster said, keep pumping still you get the correct height. Though do bare in mind that height is for 17 degree C. The car will go up down, depending on temperature. If it is taking excessive amounts of fluid/pressure to reach that height. You have blown displacers and no amount of f...

Re: Test for broken spheres
Yes it was the rivnut solution and it failed on the front. They have now been replaced by the man you are talking about, who uses the original manufacture method. That is the way I would go, if I had to do a car again. I don't have faith in valves sealing effectively.

Re: Test for broken spheres
The rears have Mike Satur valves in them, which appear to be holding, at the moment. So to do them would require sourcing two good rear units, they are getting hard to get hold of.

Re: K series rebuild
I can confirm that you can improve a k series. I have a standard engine with different air filter, throttle body and exhaust and has 10bhp more than standard! as proved when put on a rolling road! My car can't be mapped as its too old. As for porting & polishing a head I think you need to know what...

Re: K series rebuild
…...You would need to fiddle with the engine management settings..... Do you mean remapping? This should be done as a final modification after everything else. Yes but the problem is too many people think they can get extra performance without doing that. The classic example is fitting a larger thr...

Re: K series rebuild
I am skeptical about polishing and porting a head on one of the these cars. Unless you put it on a rolling road, how will you know that you have actually boosted power in anyway? Is the gas flow on a bog standard head in anyway restrictive? I suspect with a car like the MGF, if you can liberate any ...

Test for broken spheres
My fathers MGF has just had the front spheres regassed and he says it has transformed the ride. Haven't had a chance to drive it myself, thanks to the current situation. However I thought I would share one change to the car with you. On a car with springs you can perform a bounce test, to check the ...

Re: corner rot by the sills
This car had received a coat of dinitrol, fun to try and clean off. Plus the odd small fire when I missed a bit when welding. I am not saying that such treatments are not effective but they need to be applied properly, which not always easy for the home mechanic. For example, they won't flow properl...

Re: Nearside front suspension leak
My guess is the failure mode is due to how the valve was fitted. It was fitted like a tyre valve to a rim, except such a system wasn't designed for this application. The valve failed, releasing all the nitrogen, the membrane was compressed by the fluid in the system and failed. The fluid then leaked...

corner rot by the sills
I bring this up because I think it is worth owners checking all four corners of their MGF, if they haven't already done do. My father removed the rear subframe and engine to do a variety of jobs. While there was easy access I decided to help by dealing with some minor rot on the offside rear wing, i...

Incorect shocks?
While finding the suspension leak on the MGF, I had a look at the adjustable shocks on the car. Basically I pushed them in and out, to see if their was any difference in the resistance. Well I couldn't feel any. Now my understanding is MGF shocks should only resist in one direction? Is that correct?

Re: Nearside front suspension leak
Had it apart and found the problem. The displacer is blown, it has been fitted with a Mike Satur schrader valve, fitted like a tyre valve. The fluid had blown through this valve, indicating an internal failure.

Re: Nearside front suspension leak
Have you removed the black plastic cover under the bonnet? The tube from the nearside filler valve to the sphere may be ruptured but only leaking when the suspension moves and over pressures; guess how I know..... We have and with the dye the leak should show up. My guess is a leaking suspension di...

Nearside front suspension leak
We have an MGF which keeps sinking on the nearside, couldn't find any leaks, bit of a mystery. So I put some UV dye in the system to see if we could locate the problem. Well it sank again, once again no sign of any leak, till I used the blacklight. The area in front of and to inside of the front nea...

Re: MGF, collapsed one side, finding leak
My plan is to ad UV dye the suspension fluid when it next sinks. Wait a bit and then use a black light to find the leak.

MGF, collapsed one side, finding leak
My father's MGF has sunk on the near side. I know that it needs pumping up and in fact he has done that, it simply sunk again. There must be a leak, the system can only sink by three methods. Loss of fluid, loss of displacer gas, change in temperature. We can dismiss the third cause, that would caus...

Re: MGF ride quality
I have heard of the valve option, but I can still see a problem. it is essentially refurbishing old parts, spending that amount of money only for the displacers to corrode or the rubber membrane to go could be a painful experience. Thanks for the facebook link, I will take a look. My first post was ...

MGF ride quality
Had a look at an MGF to replace my fathers current MGF which needs allot doing to it. The car we looked at had better paint, was in better condition and had the standard wheels. However there was a problem, even with the smaller standard wheels the ride was simply unacceptable. It was better than my...
