Re: Irregular idle
Steve, The engine earth strap fixes to the body in the centre of the rear engine bulkhead. On mine I have long distrusted this arrangement of two straps and the bodywork for something as important as the earth. I have wired a heavy connection direct from the alternator mounting to the battery -ve i...

Re: Irregular idle
Weird that both the IACV are being held open (at the same position)? I agree - a manifold leak ought to see the IACV being closed. Never say never about the earth - especially as it may upset the sensor readings and then demand that the engine needs more air. What temperature reading are you seeing...

Re: Irregular idle
Wouldn't the ECU be trying to shut the valve if there is an air leak?
All pipes are clear. The original IACV wasn't gummed up. It only had a fine layer of sooty deposit.

Re: Irregular idle
Got the little blighter plugged in again this morning. It has thrown fault codes on TPS, coolant temp, oil temp, etc. Both the TPS and coolant temp are new. Once we reset it, everything looked OK except the stepper motor. This was in the wrong position. Blipping the throttle brought it back down, bu...

Re: Irregular idle
Thanks for the suggestions again Greg. It's had a new coolant temp sensor. Two different idle air control valves (both used though). Both were cleaned thoroughly. It's on a new alloy throttle body and a new throttle position sensor. At some point, I'll get diagnostics on it again and see what codes ...

Re: Fast Idle issues
Good to hear you have solved the problem easily. I'm having far more trouble unfortunately!
My 1996 VVC had a plastic throttle body which I replaced with a metal 52mm one. Turns out there was nothing wrong with it though!

Re: Irregular idle
I took the IACV apart and cleaned it out with carb cleaner. I can't find any air leaks, although that's not to say there isn't one! Like others, I'm heading towards the valve being faulty, but I'm assuming it could also be fine but receiving an incorrect signal from the ECU? I'm hoping to get it on ...

Re: Irregular idle
Thanks for that. Cleaned the IACV this morning. It had a fair coating of powdery carbon. The brass coloured valve section was showing signs of wear. It had a couple of lines around it on the taper. Putting it back on clean made little difference. I've reset the TPS several times now. After the first...

Re: Irregular idle
You might want to get hold of one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0085JE3X8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 Down load an app for your phone and away you go, it will give the OBD fault code. I use one myself very effective :thumbsu: David Hi David, Will this work on p...

Re: Irregular idle
So the saga continues.... Changed the throttle body complete with TPS. Also changed the coolant temp sensor (brown one) at the same time since I was there and had one in stock. Although I haven't driven the car, I've only run it in the garage, it seems to have made no difference whatsoever! :( Today...

Re: Irregular idle
Well, I've not yet got to this sorted. And it's getting worse! It will now regularly sit at idle and then gradually rise to over 2000 rpm. This morning, I pulled up at work and it settled to 900, but started rising. So I sat to see where it went to..... hovering over the ignition key (!) it kept on ...

There's the 26/28 on 15" rims in Beffios post. That's what I saw in my handbook. I'll run with it and see how I get on.

Re: which tyres ?
Steve, I would be a little concerned at 28 rears. 26 or 28 front is fine, I've run both but I found the best rear pressure at 34, 36 makes the back end a little light at speed. You may encounter tyre wear on the outside tread sections at that pressure, however I listen to what I'm told and I cannot...

Re: which tyres ?
Just had a full set of Japanese Toyo's fitted and they felt ridiculously light at the back. Then I found that the garage had set the rears at 36psi! I've dropped the pressures to 26 front and 28 rear and what a difference! If anyone is looking for Japanese made Toyo's, mine came from http://www.tyre...

Re: Cam rattle
Fair point Robbo. But it was fine one day and loose the next. I don't think it has had a chance to damage the thread. If it was that bad, the drive pin and sprocket location would also been warn and they are fine. Hopefully, I caught it quick enough. I'll be doing a belt change later in the year, so...

Re: Brian Johnsons Cars That Rock MG night
I thought it was entertaining. I love his enthusiasm :D Given the limited time available, they were simply trying to mention the most significant models in MG history. The models they chose did, in my view, represent landmark moments in the company's history. I particularly liked the comment about t...
