Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

Well, my interest is not to build a track but a rather fast road car. :) But it's a matter of money. I know that money no objection anything can be done. But then it defeats the purpose of going with a MG. If in the end you could have bought an already faster and better car with the money you spent,...

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

This is a misconception. Yes, it was built by Lotus for Opel and they were involved in the design. But it's not just an Elise with different body panels. This is internet jibberish. And over here they are not going up, yet. But like I said it was just an example. I could have as well said a MR2 MK2....

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

IIRC the general approach was on altering the car as little as possible. If you are after a Q car you can move the fuel tank to the front, take out the bulk heads either side of the engine and create a massive space for what ever you fancy. Yes we talked about moving fuel tank, bulk heads etc on th...

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

Surely an engine swap will be required for what ever you use as a base unless it is already a Boxter or Elise beater. Unless you add un-natural options such as a charger or nitrous. You are absolutely right. This was exactly my point. I would need at a minimum an engine swap. And from my engine swa...

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

OK then. After much research it seems the MG TF may not be the correct platform for my project car. My intention was to make it into a fast car. An Elise or Boxter eater. But for that an engine swap is a minimum. It seems it would be more trouble than worth it and I better start with something else?

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

Sure. I was just wondering how it compares or keeps up with the best of the best, such as Elise, Exige or even the larger Cayman. Don't mean in speed as that is a matter of power. I mean handling and other driving aspects.

Thanks. I mean the exact same photo as you have in your signature though. It's such a nice photo of a MG profile.:)

Re: Engine Swap for a larger engine? Possible?

Thanks. That's good news. It's one of the most annoying parts of new cars. Everything must talk to everything within the car. About the engine, maybe even change the whole set up to a longitudinal? Would be more work but would open up the engine options. I don't think a V6 is much longer than it is ...

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

OK, thanks for the tip. I will google that.

By the way, that's a very nice photo you have for your signature. I guess that's your car? Very nice stance. Are those 16" wheels? Would love to see the original picture without the solarization effect.

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

Ok. I will take a look at some MGTF and Elise cutaways and compare the suspensions. But I cant see what could possibly be inherently superior and not just a matter of set up and tuning, as the TF also has fully independent suspension all around. By the way, the thread is a bit of a two way only chat...

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

But are we talking about better suspension design or better suspension set up?

Suspension set up and tuning can be adjusted. If the MG is more set up for ride comfort for example- The Elise is definitely set up for sports driving.

Now if we are talking suspension design, then it's a lost cause.

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

Yes, I know the Elise is much lighter. Hence why I asked if the problem was just power. ;)

Lighter means more power per weight. So I was wondering, had the MGTF the same power per weight as an Elise, would it keep up? Or the limitation is also with the chassis, suspension and handling?

Re: How is the MGTF as a sports car?

Thanks for the reply.

So the only reason it won't keep up with an Elise is power? Or also handling?

Where would you spend your money to make it faster?

How is the MGTF as a sports car?

Is it a good sports car? I read it handles much better than the MGF. But how trackable is it? With a few mods would it make a good track day car? I know it wasn't made for that. I'm just asking if the potential is there or if it's a losing proposition. I read the MGF hydragas is more comfortable but...

Lovely examples indeed. I agree with the dealer description. A sure future classic. Last sports car made by MG.

Re: Engine Swap for a larger engine? Possible?

By pulling the fuse to turn it off, you mean making it feel like a car without power steering at all?

I have heard that with some cars this can present a safety problem and even interfere with other electrical systems in the car. Pulling the fuse.
Not the case with the MGF and MGTF?

Re: Engine Swap for a larger engine? Possible?

No I haven't driven a TF yet. I have only driven a F. But I dislike electrical power steerings in general. I also saw some reviewers complaining of lack of feeling for the road. This is one of the characteristics of electrical power steerings. So the TF is indeed only electrical? What is a non EPAS ...

Re: Engine Swap for a larger engine? Possible?

I think a V8 is too much. V6 is fine. :) Is the original PG1 box robust enough to take more power? Yes, a Jaguar engine would probably be more refined than the KV6. But the thing about a Jaguar V6 is that all Jaguars are RWD, so they are all longitudinal engine. The only exception I can think of is ...
