MGF 1.8i fails to start after repairs to door lock and horn
My 2001 MGF 1.8I had been sitting for a while due to lockdowns etc. So had no MoT, which required a stuck driver's door to be freed and the non working horn to be fixed. At this point the car jump-started immediately - the battery was flat - and I then ran it for a while before moving it into a more...

Re: Tyre pressures
Yes thanks, quite certain, as multiple gauges have been used and show the same pressures. I'm now convinced that the problem is the hydragas units need regassing - a job for the winter months.nigelandjo wrote:Are you certain your pressure gauge is accurate?

Re: Tyre pressures
OK, having looked elsewhere on the forum, I can see this could be the answer as, no, the spheres have not been regassed. Can you possibly provide details of a supplier of such a service?CubMG wrote:mail@alaister.co.uk wrote:talkingcars wrote:Did you get the spheres regassed ? No gas no suspension .

Re: Tyre pressures
Read my post - I wasn't talking about your seriously under inflated tyres - I was talking about the car in the post I quoted My apologies. So do you believe over inflated is more dangerous than under inflated, despite tyre wall warning of only under inflation? Also, do you have any other observatio...

Re: Tyre pressures
Reduced from recommended 26 psi to 20 psi made a huge difference.talkingcars wrote:Buzzy-Beans wrote:………II bet the car involved was running excesivly over inflated tyres.

Re: Tyre pressures
Not the case, I had the suspension pumped up to spec as it WAS very low when I purchased the car.talkingcars wrote:mail@alaister.co.uk wrote:Buzzy-Beans wrote:.......I suspect you suspension is low so under inflating you tyres is giving you back a soft ride, not a sensible idea.

Re: Tyre pressures
Technically speaking if you do run tyre pressures different to those specified by the manufacturers then that is a modification and you should notify your insurance company as such! Wow, that's a bit worrying because, after some (accidental) experimentation, I run the tyres on my 2001 MGF way off t...

Re: Mobile mechanics & garage services
I thought I should bring you up to date with the work I've been doing on that blown head gasket. During the rebuild, I discovered why the auxiliary belt tensioner bolt had not been even finger tight, it's because it's inaccessible with a normal socket, as it's behind part of the subframe that should...

Thanks for advice, I'll get a Dowty washer. What about PDFE tape on threads, to ease removal in future?mgtfnut wrote: It's a long time since I had to bleed my system, I have a different to normal system, but I seem to recall a Dowty seal washer under a flanged bolt as the bleed arrangement.

Re: Mobile mechanics & garage services
Thanks for your kind words gents. Charles, I intend putting a fibre washer under that bleed screw head to provide a good seal and hopefully make it easier to remove later. Also, are you suggesting I post this story elsewhere on the forum, so it is more likely to be seen by first readers and, if so, ...

Re: Mobile mechanics & garage services
I thought I should relate my recent experience following the purchase of a 2001 MGF 1.8i in Bournemouth. It was in what I considered to be mint condition: 64k miles; all important upgrade work done on the cylinder head; 4 brand new, good spec tyres; and, full MoT. It just needed a polish and a soft ...

Re: Vacuum pipe breakage
Thanks Nigel, I'm in Moreton, just outside Dorchester, and I'll try the contact you've provided. I received the head back from the engineers today, skimmed and valves lapped in, so now it's time to start putting it all back together again - very carefully!

Vacuum pipe breakage
Hi from a newbie, In the process of repairing a head gasket failure in my MGF - caused by a mechanic hired by the previous owner to replace the water pump and failing to bleed the cooling system properly, because the engine bleed screw was seized! - I managed to break the vacuum pipe between the inl...
