Re: gearbox removal method

Well, I got the gearbox out and rebuilt. It will hopefully be going back in next weekend. It was a big job taking everything apart. I did drain the coolant and the Hydragas system so didn't have to worry about that plumbing being in the way. I did drop the belly pan as well as my car has air-con and...

Re: gearbox removal method

RobboMC Thanks for doing this how-to. I will be doing this job over the winter and was not looking forward to dropping the subframe. The thought of lifting the car high enough to clear the engine in my narrow garage scares the liver out of me. Lots of weight and physics involved there! Just today it...

Re: Frustration with the After-Market

Geoff, the same applies to North America. There are no standards for aftermarket car parts, and for that matter there are few standards for automotive modifications. It's pretty much "Anything Goes". The only recourse in the event of loss or injury is the courts. There is a lot of junk on the market...

Re: Frustration with the After-Market

I went by our two big parts suppliers this morning. One was totally useless and the other at least was able to confirm that the thread is M12x1.0 so I have got that far, even if he couldn't supply the parts. I am going to try to hunt down the fittings online. As the car is back together and running ...

Re: Frustration with the After-Market

To tell the truth the MG Sport and Racing sticker was the main thing I wanted. I added the hoses to make the order worthwhile. I suppose I am whining as I seem to be having more issues with UK suppliers not answering e-mails and generally not giving the same customer service they did a couple of yea...

Re: Frustration with the After-Market

Rob, I thought the same thing about the "ZR" hose. As we don't have any ZRs here I assumed that they must have made a variant with a hydraulic clutch. Here's the package and a pic of the hose end. http://www.fototime.com/7A1F352B1A4C502/standard.jpg ( Ignore the bit on the package that says LMA Perf...

Re: Frustration with the After-Market

Just a little addition to the above... One of the other items I ordered was a silicone charcoal canister vacuum Hose Set for the MGF. Looking at the picture on their site it looks like nicely moulded bespoke hoses to fit the charcoal canister What arrived was 2 lengths of cut hose. Fit for purpose s...

Frustration with the After-Market

I bought a braided stainless replacement clutch hose for my MGF from a well-known UK seller. Car jacked up, old hose off, fluid drained. Of course the upper fitting was too tight to undo in situ so I removed the short pipe at the slave cylinder end and removed the hose on the bench. The new hose is m...

Re: Aftermarket boot release?

Some time ago I read a post on installing one of these where they fitted it as a push release using a rod rather than a pull release on the cable. Giving this more thought, assuming the "push" method works it could be possible to hide much of the solenoid unit inside the cavity behind the boot latch...

My B&G unit gave me early warning and saved my engine when the HG went. :thumbsu:
I have the warning light mounted in the instrument panel but have muffled the beeper so
it won't wake the neighbours when I leave for work!

Re: 3-phase machine tools...

We decommissioned a high school seven years ago. There was a milling machine the size of two Volkswagen Beetles stacked one on top of the other. Over the years scrappers have broken into the school and stolen everything of value including all of the plumbing pipes, the panic bars off the doors and t...

Re: Waterless Coolants ?

I have been considering it but have resisted so far, mainly due to cost. I am also having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of the cooling system not being pressurised. That makes me wonder in the cooling system will work as designed. I never heard that the stuff may be flammable. That's ...

Re: polybushing

About 150.-180. for a quality set. My car feels much more precise after fitting poly-bushes and I haven't done the inner A-arm bushes as I didn't want to drop the subframe. The existing A-arm bushings are in good shape, and the mix of rubber and poly still gives a nice firm ride without being too ha...

Re: MGF/TF service schedule sheets

Rob, I like your sheets. They would be very useful as a record of work done, which is something I am not good at doing! I have another suggestion. It would be very handy if the Register or the MGCC could market Service Stickers that can be placed on the car as a reminder. The dealers used to do this...

Re: Bleeding clutch ;-)

DOT 4 it is. That's fine to lube the cylinder while refitting the seals Watch for pitting in the bore of the cylinder. It pays to hone the cylinder while you are at it to remove any scoring or glazing in the bore. It will take out minor pits but bigger pits can defeat your efforts. I had good succes...

Re: Restoration Garage - Vancouver

I second that it was likely Sean's car. His car has a Chinese TF front bumper so that would settle it, although with the show being from season 1 it may have been shot before he did the mod. Unfortunately his Volcano F had it's garage collapse on it last winter and is off the road waiting for repair...

Re: Jap Spec Exhaust Question

Rob, In the end I did a search on E-bay.uk and found a decat pipe for an Elise that fits the bill. For once an Elise part was half the cost of an MG part, and one is now on the way. :thumbsu: I work for our local school district, and our teachers are almost certainly going out on strike when school ...

Re: Jap Spec Exhaust Question

Thanks Rob! Just what I was looking for. Now I just have to find the most reasonably priced one I can. (After all it's just a pipe!) I have to keep in mind the cost of postage-about 40 quid! :o I wish I had kept the old cat I took off my first F. I could have cut off the flanges and welded in a bit ...
