Oil change frequency - low summer mileage only

Apologies for the dull and dumb question... I have always changed the oil and filter annually when doing 1k - 2k per year using a decent filter and Magnatec 10w40. However as my mileage has shrunk to maybe 200 to 300 miles per year (only a few runs out, majority 30 miles+ so up to temperature), is i...

Re: WANTED: UK passenger side boot hinge -Tahitian blue

Second time I've heard about this in 12 months. Not sure what that means in terms of buying second hand? But finding a replacement in colour would certainly be more cost effective. I think I still have a grey one from a Mk1, but obviously, that's the wrong colour!!! ...with mine being the other! Al...

Re: Rear brakes

The solid one (RHS) is exactly as I remember mine. The ribbed one (LHS) is probably what mine looked like - other than it having a few ribs along some of the length I can't quite remember - but I can't imagine there was more than one ribbed version in the Longbridge parts bin! I'm now curious to kno...

Re: Coolant hoses, engine out replace all? Silicone or genuine MG Rover?

I had a similar thought the other year (there was a thread on here) re whether to bite the bullet and change every hose - but the points raised above are good re is every hose still available? And how long have they been stored? And under what conditions have they been stored? The combined wisdom wa...

Re: Rear brakes

I stripped down and regressed my rear brakes a few months ago - on each side one pin was smooth, and one pin was ribbed. Same on the other side. I can't recall now whether the ribbed one was top or bottom. I just reassembled in the same position - but no idea whether they had always been in that ori...

Re: Boot spring sheared - how to replace?

You should be able to change it single handed (I'm sure I did). Just ensure the area around the left hinge is protected from the rear corner of the boot. I started by removing the half of the hinge attached to the car, so that I could leave the boot closed so that it was open for the shortest time....

Re: Boot spring sheared - how to replace?

Big thanks to Rob who very kindly supplied replacement hinge assembly - top bloke. One question to Rob or anyone... As I only need to change the left for now, any views on whether I should be able to do with the boot lid in situ (i.e. without removing the right) - single handed and with something pr...

Re: MGF TF GEAR CHANGE PROBLEMS

I can get the gear I wish when the engine is not running but once it is running in idle mode I cannot change gear. For example.....I put the car into reverse gear, start the car & reverse off the drive. I cannot then select 1 st gear or any gear or take it out of reverse unless I switch the engine ...

Re: Caliper wind back tool

However, this is all you need https://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-craft-brake-caliper-rewind-tool/4119r If the above tool doesn’t wind the piston back with ease than it is a sign that the calliper needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Just this week I've used the above tool to wind back the pistons on ...

Re: Boot spring sheared - how to replace?

Rob, I had one snap last year on the daily 2003 Typhoon TF. Sorry to hear that - but good to know that I'm not alone! It happened just after I'd driven back 2 miles with the engine cover not bolted down. Why? Well during the MOT a coolant hose sprang a leak therefore I lashed up with 'amalgamation ...

Re: Boot spring sheared - how to replace?

Chris, are you going to any shows in the new year? If so, potentially I could hand one over to you. I have BRG hinges and I should have charcoal grey too. Cheers Rob, Much appreciated. If you have a BRG one that you can spare that would be great (partly as I'm colour-blind so might not notice much!...

Re: Boot spring sheared - how to replace?

To Rob's earlier point about realignment, several years ago I spent many months (on and off) trying to get the boot to shut cleanly so that all the shut lines were good. The sticking point (haha) was the front nearside corner always caught on the bodywork when everything else was seemingly lined up...

Re: Boot spring sheared - how to replace?

Rob (or others) Re your spare - if available, how much would you want. They look a bit ugly to post though. And what colour is it please? The car is Brooklands Green (code HYF) so unlikely anyone has one of those. British Racing Green or Black might be fine. Or I'll have to improve my rattle can pai...

Re: Boot spring sheared - how to replace?

Hi Rob, Wow, that was a fast response - thanks. I now see that the entire hinge units can be purchased - as you say the annoyance being the loss of body colour. Not that critical though. I have every confidence in my ability to remove it. lining up again? Less so! Ideally I'd wait for a warm weekend...

Boot spring sheared - how to replace?

Hi folks, I went to close the boot and something 'pinged' - then no resistance holding the boot lid up. I then realised that I'd never noticed how the boot lid holds up! On investigation the coiled spring (that I only now know exists) on the NSR has snapped. I can now easily pull the remaining sprin...

Re: DVLA "tax it or lose it" letter

Yes I also received that letter a couple of weeks ago for my SORNed F. I thought it was a bit odd given that a) I don't normally get that of any other reminders to tax/reSORN - and b) that I actually taxed it for 1 month in Dec 2020 - therefore come May it had been on SORN for less time than any oth...

Re: Outdoor cover

I commented above about buying a Hamilton one and I wish i didn't. It destroyed my paintwork. Even though I uncovered it a few times each month to air it has still ruined the laquer on the paint. It also made the inside go mouldy until I started to use some dehumidifiers. Very expensive too so I do...
