Re: 2002 tf exhaust

When I bought my 2002 TF it was only 2.5 years old, the valve had been disabled I suspect by the original dealer at PDI.

P0042 HO2S Heater Control Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 3)

Any MEMS 3 car should have a post cat sensor, although the pre-heater isn't used in this sensor.

Re: Stereo replacement.

It would be worth searching online for the manual for the Alpine as this should have some instructions on how to the extract the unit, often it is four prongs inserted to unlock the catches holding the unit into its cage. I would carefully remove the centre dashboard air vent, this will give you acc...

Re: Battery went flat while driving - what's the problem?

It does sound like a dead alternator, not sue if it is the same on an early F but on the TF the complete absence of the battery/charge light means a dead alternator. When my TF’s alternator packed up I didn’t notice the light but the car drove without issues right until the battery ran out of electr...

Re: Original MGF Luggage Carrier

I bought a clip on boot rack just after buying the TF in 2005 because I thought I would need it, so far I've used it once so I would see if you need one before committing to getting one.

Re: Wiper/Indicator stalk issues

I would inspect the loom where it passes close to the boot hinge for damage, it may seem unrelated but damage to that part of the loom can lead to odd electrical behaviour that you describe.

That does sound like the valve in the cap has failed, in any case I would put new cap on and bleed the system

Re: Stainless Coolant pipes

My TF's pipes were changed 13 years ago and they still look new unlike the 7 year old originals. Having said that the original pipes tend to go from the inside out, mine looked OK until the chap doing the service prodded his finger through the pipe!

In theory the recommended pressures should give you more warning if the car about to go around.

Re: Rear Bumper Removal 2002 MG TF

The main issue that you are likely to find is the two main large Torques bolts as they tend to seize into the crush cans that can start to collapse so try plenty of penetrating oil on those. Even then you may find that you can feel the cans collapsing so one option is unbolt the cans from the body b...

Re: MG TF 1st and Reverse gear selection

If you haven’t already done so I would change the clutch fluid, quite some time ago I was having issues with selecting gear etc and got as far getting quotes to change the clutch. Someone suggested changing the fluid first as it is a relatively simple job and sure enough all the issues went away.

Re: Rubber bellows (gaiters) for handbrake and gear change cables.

The OEM part number is ULS000012 at a cost of around £5 each and can be found at Rimmers Brown & Gammons etc. Someone on eBay is producing a rebuild kit including the ball joints.

Re: MGF: size will matter

Welcome The F/TF is one of those cars that you need to sit in before you can work out if you will be comfortable driving one. For example, this week on another forum someone was complaining that their feet were getting stuck under the dashboard, however no one else even with bigger feet seem to have...

Re: Replacing Mk2 VVC With Mk1 VVC

Looking at Rimmer’s, there is a change of injector at VIN YD522572, this I think is when the F was fitted with MEMS 3 and the second lambda sensor.

Re: gears.

If the issue is across all gears is to check the state of the gear selector rod seal where it enters the gearbox. This can leak over time leading to a mess around the selector. Although I have replaced mine due to it leaking I was surprised how much freer the selector was with the new seal in place....

Re: 2002 MG TF fault codes

Given that the sensor and the preheater have seemingly failed it suggests a wiring issue, I would start checking to see if the sensor is still plugged into the main loom.
