MGF Headlamp upgrade.
I am somewhat fortunate that living in the south of France, the weather is generally not bad, and winter driving is a thing of the past. However, when I do occasionally have to take the MGF out in the dark the quality of the headlamps is (when compared to a modern) somewhat lacking. The car whilst R...

Re: teaching a learner - manual
I doubt it, as long as your clutch is in good order. I taught plenty of learners in a previous life. If they can master clutch control, then the rest is easy. Just be careful you don't cook it teaching hill starts! Remember the phrase "Now listen to me before one of us dies!" (Blackadder) Best of lu...

Re: what have you done on your mgf today?
I had the hydragas spheres on my 97 'F' re-gassed in 2017, since when the ride quality has been exceptional. The other day, whilst negotiating a "Berlin Cushion" speed bump, the front of the car grounded - I think it was the flexible air deflector that touched. Anyway today I thought I'd check the r...

Re: Replacing plastic rear screen
Talk to Peter at MGFMania. He can either replace the perspex one or sell you a glass screen that will replace it.

Re: Has my belt skipped a tooth?
Correct belt tension should enable you to rotate the belt 90° on its long run from the exhaust cam wheel to the crank. With the cam locking tool in place it may be necessary to "ease" the crank pulley slightly to get the belt in place, but it should still be aligned with the casting mark between the...

Re: Original MGF Luggage Carrier
It's amazing how much you can actually get in the boot. When we did Italy there were two pull alongs, a holdall, coats and other stuff and there was still room. Don't forget that there is "some" space under the bonnet, and if your passenger or yourself are not too tall you can get small items behind...

Re: what have you done on your mgf today?
Went out for a run in the MGF yesterday. All good. Parked back at the house while I unloaded some shopping and then intended to put the car away. Key in, all lights on, no starter. Managed to roll it backwards & bump it and it started fine. Put it back in the garage, checked the battery, OK, but put...

Re: Gear selector
Sounds like the garage you have been talking to a) know sod all about MGFs and b) don't want the job. It may well be that one of the gearchange cables has come adrift. That's not a huge job to fix, if you know what you're doing. Bin the garage and find someone who knows what they're doing. At least ...

Re: Smoke INSIDE the MK1 mgf
No worries and you're welcome. I don't envy you the task. I think Rover started with the heater matrix and build the whole car around it. Patience, dear boy! Being a lazy bugger I would just blank off the two heater pipes at the engine and wear extra clothes... good luck.

Re: Smoke INSIDE the MK1 mgf
The heater resistor pack isn't to adjust the temperature - it is to allow the various fan speeds for the motor. Are any of the fan speeds non-operational? Does the heater fan still run when it's smoking? The resistor pack is accessible from the passenger side footwell - it's on the LHS of the heater...

The photo is of a Mk1 dash but the diagram is a later one, after 2000 model year(digital odometer). The warning light arrangement is different. On the early dash (as yours) the only warning light with a triangle in it is the one for the hazard warning lights. They will flash when the alarm is activa...

Re: Tilting Car LIft
I looked at one of these a while back - ideal for my Austin Seven with its very narrow track, but I decided (actually the wife decided) that I didn't need it. I bought an extra low trolley jack with a 55cm lift instead. It does most jobs.

Re: Tilting Car LIft
Just make sure that you've got enough clearance between your folded scissor lift and the underneath of your car so you can actually run it over it. Might not be a problem with a standard TF but if it's been lowered you might struggle. I've seen a scissor lift fitted inside a depression in the garage...

Re: Wheel Nuts
I bought a set of stainless/chrome wheel nuts to replace the originals. Same spanner size, taper & thread, from one of those traders on the Bay of E. No problems to report. Not sure I'd trust an ally nut, far to easy to strip the thread.

Re: Tilting Car LIft
There are various types of car lifts available all of which cost between about £1500 and a few Grand; Just beware that there are always hidden extras in the adverts, in particular that delivery (on top of the sale price) involves an Artic lorry and it is up to YOU to get it off the trailer. You will...
