Re: Stepspeed problems
Lots of problems are electrical on the CVT boxes, with the main connector to the box (C0243 in the attached pdf, a round turn-lock type) being the main culprit. Also check the plugs around the gear stick area as shown on page 2 of the pdf. Seeing you are in the Midlands I guess Burton-on-Trent isn’t...

Re: MGF Starting problems
If it were the starter relay there would be no clicking sound at all and the voltage wouldn't collapse. Also, you wouldn’t get a 12v trigger to the starter motor solenoid, which you said is good. There is another earth strap from the engine block to the rear bulkhead. Still from your description I w...

Re: Plugs not getting any fuel and car not starting
Is the fuel pump whirring when you switch on ignition? If not, it could be (in time-to-tackle order) a) the inertia switch (black rubber box in the engine compartment, about where the aerial sits) b) the fuel pump relay (part of the relay block inside the ECU mounting bracket or in the boot on late ...

Re: Brinell Test
Looking at the head in Mykel's photo I would suggest that it's "Castleton" (beyond Hope) due to the indentations around the fire rings. If your head looks anything like the picture Mykel posted, then it has the hardness of cream cheese and is essentially scrap. Yep, gents, both of you are spot on. ...

Re: New k-series book by Iain Ayre and Rob Hawkins
I indeed have received mine and read most of it. Mark is absolutely spot on in his comment, some things do lack a bit of detail, but that’s what you would expect from a book this size. Like Mark, I do not share all the practices described. In particular I’m no friend of skimming heads, as usually on...

If you haven’t started breaking it, I’d still be interested to take it over here. Could you please pm me the VIN so I can check with the local authorities if I could get it registered to save it, Tony?
If it needs to be scrapped, I’d be very, very interested in the wheels!

Re: Brinell Test
If I had the tool to do it (seriously pondering buying one off Aliexpress ), I would probably measure somewhere inbetween the fire rings, where the mating surface with the gasket would not be affected in critical areas, or even inside the combustion chamber, valves permitting due to tool size. test_...

Re: Fuel Gauge
And it’s an easy way to kill the fuel pump as well. The constant flow of petrol through the pump acts like a kind of “coolant” for the pump, so if it runs dry chances are that the little pump motor burns out. My TF’s PO had been there and fitted a cheap aftermarket pump. Which wasn’t a wise decision...

Re: MOT Failure - Front NS Brake Binding
Remove caliper and bracket, use a set of suitably sized wire brushes and clean down to bare metal. Be careful not to touch the piston gaskets. Use some copper grease on sliding surfaces. WD40 or other petroleum based stuff is not recommended on brakes, as the rubber material used is resistant agains...

Re: adding ABS
Anti lock brakes are a sensible thing on a daily driver, which is used all year round in all kinds of weather. From my present point of view, using the TF in summer only, I’d be happy to get rid of them. Braking is much more direct and precise without. If you use the car in adverse conditions, I rec...

Re: Does stalling damage an F
No worries, these engines are quite fool-proof, as handing mine over to my daughter’s boyfriend four days after he passed his licence has proved impressively. Daughter included, by the way.
He drove the car for a total 3,800 kms over the summer. No problems whatsoever.
