That's the cure then - obscure the petrol smell with the odour of musty carpets !

Hopefully though with the fumes now cured you'll be able to drive in a straight line again. :D

It appeared that the fuel pump had at some stage been removed. When the pump had been replaced mastic, or something similar, had been used on the large rubber seal. There is a warning in a technical bulletin about removing the fuel pump, so its likely that whoever removed the pump previously damaged the neck of the tank and therefore used the sealant to effect a seal.

We fitted a new fuel tank and pump to Paul's car. The design of the pump seal was changed at some point (2000?) and an additional metal cap is fitted over the fuel pump seal on the new tank. Unfortunately, the new style pump requires a small harness in order to fit it to an early car. This harness is not available, so we had to splice part of a TF loom into Paul's car.

When the engineer finished the work he put the hood back onto Paul's car. Unfortunately, he did not notice that one of the clamps did not engage correctly. This lead to some moisture getting into the car. Sorry Paul. :(
