Alternator change over year?

Post by CORKY » Thu Aug 08, 2019 8:09 am

I am the new owner of an MGF. It is Y531 TPO registration. First registered in March 2001. I have never owned an MGF before so forgive my inexperience. As it was registered in March 2001 I take it that means it was manufactured very early that year. Is there any way I can tell from the registration date or the various numbers stamped on the car whether it has the old type or new type of alternator?

I have been told that the numbers indicate that the car has a 'coil pack type engine' and therefore has a Bosch alternator. The same source gives the number 233277876006 for it.

Does this sound correct to all you very experienced MGF owners?

I'm sorry I can't answer your question directly, but check out Rimmers website, armed with your VIN number. This should give you the information you require. Alternatively, call one of the specialist service/dealerships that are still around; they should be happy to offer advice and guidance.

Hi Corky

Welcome to the forum

I think the alternator change came at the same time as MEMS 3.
The later alternator has a white plug with 3 cables, the early one had 2 wires that are bolted to the terminals.

that makes sense as the difference in hooking up the alternator to the car is by the extra connection for MEMS3 input. I'm even told with some fiddling you can use the latter one for a Mk1 car. (being much cheaper bought new)
MGFvvc - 90FVBG - charcoal - you might think it is original - (1996 nr:8204)
MGTF 120 - 57RNJ7 - BRG - every day is an MG day - (2005)
MGC CGT - SJ08DY - tartan red - 1985 restauration fairly original - (1968 nr: 4137)

The extra wire goes to the ECU so it can alter the engine speed when there is extra load on the alternator.

Thanks guys for all the help, I think I have the right alternator - Bosch YLE102430.
However there is one further problem. The adjustment stud that passes through the alternator and it's bracket is seized soild in the old alternator (steel in a thread through aluminium). The alternator I have bought does not have this stud but the hole and thread are good. Anyone know the stud part number? Or failing that, the specification of it?

The Rimmers Bros site often gives bolt spec.

All fixed now. The Bosch alternator is in and working fine. Had to tap out a new thread for the bolt.

I have three alternators, one on the car, one needing reconditioning and one with a rusted and seized bolt. Both the one needing reconditioning and the one on the car seem to be threaded to take an M6 bolt. The only way to remove the seized bolt will be to drill it out, it is broken off inside the hole without enough sticking out to get hold of.

I am now wondering if I have in fact fitted the right alternator. A bit more research tells me that YLE102430 comes in three types.
85amp/12volt
85amp/14volt
110amp/12volt
Does anyone know what was the original equipment on an MGF first registered on 29th March 2001?
