Help my cars on Fire !

Post by TimM » Tue Jan 27, 2009 10:17 pm

...well that was the phone call I got from Emily when I was in Abingdon on Saturday. Turns out not to be quite the case but there was a lot of steam coming out of the rear vents making people stare and point in the Town Centre. She did get the car home - we're only half a mile away so hopefully we might avoid HGF. The expansion tank was empty and evidence of water boiling out through the pressure cap found. Peter our friendly MG Rover mechanic came around to take a look on Sunday in the rain and couldn't find any obvious leaking points so we topped it up with a litre of water, swapped the pressure cap from my F to her TF and, fingers crossed, the water level is now staying the same and no more boiling. I think we're going to have to keep a close eye on it though and get it pressure tested to see if we can force a leak somewhere. :(

Popped down to Trident to get a new pressure cap for my F as well to avoid another problem ! :o

Emily didn't notice the temperature needle rise and doesn't tend to check her fluid levels very often whcih could have had somehting to do with it! Think I might have to fit a Lo Larm.

We're a week on from the boiling point and so far things have been OK - TuFTy has been to Guildford and back all week and been stuck in a traffic jams and no further loss of coolant or rising temperature - thanks to Peter for his advice and for coming out on a sunday with the family in tow in the rain to have a look at it.

I still think we're getting it pressure tested but may wait until the service now.

If anyone needs a friendly knowledgeable MGR mechanic in the Woking are then Peter is recommended by the way.

personally i would get it pressure tested sooner rather than later, and fit the B&G low level sensor kit!

It's been running for a week now under normal pressure from the system and the cap has not leaked and the water level not gone down so we're holding our breath and crossing our various bits.
