Fantastic pictures Pete, looks like you had a great time :thumbsu:

Its a long time, a very long time probably about 30 years since I've been to Lands End, I can't believe how commercialised it’s become, unbelievable, why do people in this country have to exploit and spoil everything :thumbsd:
Thanks Steve,

You have to see it to believe it - just a huge shock to us, like you we haven't been down there for at 30 years. It's just a huge money making machine - sort of had prewarning before we left by reading tourists reviews.

Still we achieved what we set out to do :thumbsu:

Just got in from picking up the baton.

Great to meet Colin and Sheila. :D

We changed over at Fremington Quay, between Bideford and Barnstaple on the North Devon coast. We are pictured with my good friend Richard Dean who was the Olympic torch bearer back in May through Barnstaple. More professional photos to follow on this and a press release will go to the local rags.

Proud to say we swapped on the day GB won some GOLD!! :thumbsu:

I headed off down the A361 to South Molton, where I went off piste to Exmoor

Can you see the stag?? There were 3 in the distance wondering what on earth I was doing!!

Image

This is Withypool, deep into the moor, very picturesque

Image

Exmoor ponies were very tame

Image

A fleeting trip into Somerset and a stop in Dulverton where the land girls was filmed.

Image

Back into Devon at the Anchor Inn who do a rather nice pint of Old Speckled Hen. Unfortunately I was very late for tea by now, so carried onwards...

Back home to other MGs and to pick up Mrs H to look at some of the best places in Tiverton:

Tivvy Museum and the Tivvy Bumper, which is behind the wall!

No, I'm not back at Chez Hainsie, this is Tivvy Castle:

More to come tomorrow when we pass the hard top onto Nigel and Jo over the border at the World's End in Somerset.

Great to meet Steve, Lin and Lee yesterday and Steve today along with Richard the Olympic torchbearer! :thumbsu:

What a day we've had - the weather wasn't great :thumbsd: but at the end of the day the sun finally came out just in time for the handover photographs. :D

We set off first thing this morning and our first stop was at Instow where we stopped for a photo looking across the River Torridge towards Appledore:
Image
Next it was on through Barnstaple, out on the country road towards South Molton, stopping at Filleigh for a photo near Castle Hill, home of Lord and Lady Arran:
Image
We then travelled coastwards again out past Blackmoor Gate, and onto the lanes leading down to Heddon's Mouth. On the way down, we stopped for a few photographs:
Image
Image
Image
Image
When we reached the Hunter's Inn at Heddon's Mouth we stopped for a coffee, after taking a photo of the hotel:
Image
we headed up a I in 4 hill back up towards the main road to Lynton, passing through Martinhoe where there were some amazing views across towards Woody Bay:
Image
After joining the main road again, we followed the road until we reached the turning leading down to Lynton, where we visited the Valley of Rocks:
Image
before carrying on down to Lynmouth via another 1 in 4 hill - fortunately none of the Escape roads were needed!
At Lynmouth we paused to take a photo looking up towards the Glen Lyn Gorge, scene of devastation in 1952 when, following 24 hours of heavy rainfall, the rivers broke their banks and flooded the village.
Image
Then it was uphill again travelling up Countisbury Hill, pausing part way up for views across the bay:
Image
From the National Trust parking area at Barna Barrow we stopped for views from the top of the hill, the first looking back towards Lynton:
Image
the second picture showing the view across Exmoor:
Image
Then it was on to County Gate, where we stopped and took photos of the view down the Doone Valley before visiting the cafe for lunch:
Image
It was just as well we took photos first as, while we were inside, the rain got worse and the views virtually disappeared in the mist. We carried on along the coast road, pausing briefly to take photos of some classics being driven by a group of Dutch visitors:
Image
Eventually we reached the notorious Porlock Hill (easier to drive down than up!):
Image
Our intended journey almost at an end, we dropped into Dunster where we stopped next to the old Yarn Market for a photo:
Image
Then it was back towards Fremington where we were due to meet Steve and Richard at 5 pm.
The hard top was transferred to Steve's car and after a number of photographs were taken of cars and Olympic torch:
Image
Image
we waved goodbye to Steve and Richard, and headed home to Bideford.
We hope our pictures show everyone what wonderful scenery there is in North Devon and South Somerset, and look forward to seeing the pictures from the other areas. :thumbsu:
As an aside, huge thanks are due to Phil for lending us back our VVC (which we sold to him last month) so we could complete our leg of the hard top relay - our other MGF is not running at present.
Good luck to everyone who will be carrying on the Hard Top Relay over the coming weeks, we've really enjoyed being part of it all. :D

Great pictures Steve, very impressed by your array of MGs. :)
It was great to meet you and Richard - look forward to seeing some of the professional photos in due course...
I worked out how to use Photobucket and managed to upload all of the photos far more easily, but unfortunately not as quickly as you did!
Best wishes

Well done to Pete for his pictures of yesterday's run, which we didn't actually get to see until this evening!
I think everyone has done the South West area proud and we've all shown what a wonderful area we are lucky enough to live in.
We look forward to seeing all the pictures from the other areas as the hard top moves on round Britain!
Good luck everyone. :thumbsu:

Dora did a stint in the relay and handed the top on to Jo at The World's End just over the border into Somerset. Photos to follow from Nigel

Bonus as it was curry night there too! :thumbsu:

Good luck to everyone with the onward journey, its been a priviledge taking part and raising money for Whizz Kids.

Day 12.

Jo and I met Steve & Dora at the World's End! ~ yes it does exist and it's just outside Wellington, Somerset! We thought that we would keep the British Racing Green theme going...

DAY 13

An earlyish start for Jo & I, to catch the tide in at Burnham on Sea just after 8am (the Bristol Channel has the 2nd highest tidal range in the world). This morning's tide was 11.1m, low tide was -0.4m so today it's risen by 11.5m.

Next was a quick dash north up the M5 to pick up the M48 to cross the Severn Bridge in to Wales.

Then it was back over the Second Severn Crossing.

And back into England.

It was then on into Bristol, to cross the Clifton Suspension Bridge (brings back memories of Effing the Bridges...)

and down to the harbour to see the SS Great Britain

A little drive later we reached Cheddar and took a drive up the Gorge (best viewed with top down ;) )

Great pictures Nigel and Jo, we remember Effing the bridges too. I think that was one of the first MGF events we ever did, apart from MGF10 which I think came first.
Good that you managed to get it into Wales, even though it wasn't there for very long! :thumbsu:

Steve, the press photos are great. Do you know which newspapers it's likely to be in yet?
