MGF Register Digital Photo Competition

Post by TimM » Wed Jun 09, 2010 10:33 pm

The Register's Digital Photo Competition is now open for entries.

This is a popular competition and will be judged once again by the public at MGFifteen on August 1st. So you need to submit your photos now. There's a limit of two per category and you don't have to enter all categories !!

If more are submitted for a category then the first two in the list will be entered.

As we had quite a few heavily photoshopped pictures last year we've created a new category for those that like to let their imaginations run wild. Some mild trimming/touching up is allowed in the other categories.

The categories are :-

Class A) MGF/TF

For photos of the MGF/TF, the cars need not necessarily be yours but the photos must !

Class B) Other MG

You're bound to have some photos of other MGs so enter them here.

Class C) Other Classic Car

Been out & about to other classic car shows ? Perhaps you have other classics in your collection. Here's your category.

Class D) MG Photoshoppers

For all those who like to use the digital tool box! Anything goes as long as its got an MG theme in it somewhere.

TO ENTER

Send your photos in printable quality to Rob Ball at robin@boycethornton.co.uk along with a filled in application form available H E R E. An e-mail will be sent to confirm receipt of your entry.

Entry is free to MGCC Members and £2 per category for NON MGCC Members.

Please send any monies by printing the application form and returning by post.

Rules

All photos must be created by the entrant and must be pre entered by Friday 23rd July.

Photos will be printed and displayed for judging by the public at MGFifteen

Trophies awarded in all categories. The top twelve photos in Class A will be used for the MGF Register 2011 calendar and will not be announced until the calendar is published.

Digital correction or enhancement may be employed in classes A, B & C but not to alter the overall appearance of the photograph. The organisers reserve the right to enter the photo in Class D if it is felt that too much "photoshopping" has been employed.

Two photos per category are allowed. If more are submitted then the first two only will be entered.

All entrants agree to allow the MGF Register to use the photos submitted as they see fit. This may include some commercial usage (ie: The Club calendar and Magazine publication)

So get snapping and submitting now to be in with a chance of the trophies. The top 12 pictures in Class A will also feature in the Register's 2011 calendar.

Good Luck :thumbsu:

Burning and dodging always happened in the darkroom in film days as well as a huge market in Cokin colour and graduated filters so minor photoshopping is no different. As long as nobody adds whole new backgrounds or shops out tress or poles etc. Even MS Live Photo Gallery now includes auto image correction and manual adjustment of lighting and colours etc.

Gives me a chance to get to know my new Nikon after the Olympus fell apart on the European Tour.

Photoshop is a great tool for photographers as I'm sure our resident pros will no doubt testify (Simon, Marty C et al). It can be used as John, rightly points out, for minor colour corrections, adjusting white balance, sharpening digital images for better resolution on display screens, cropping and a whole raft of other perfectly legitimate photographic "darkroom" techniques. If done properly the viewer should not even notice that the image has been through any form of post processing. This form of "photoshopping" is perfectly legitimate in any category IMHO.

Photographers have been fiddling in the darkroom since the dawn of time to perfect their images. Photoshop (and other such software) is the darkroom equivalent of the digital age.

Unfortunately the term photoshopping - rightly or wrongly - tends to be interpreted as placing MG F/TFs in unlikely geographic locations and other such digital tomfoolery. It is for this type of "photoshopping" that the category D was created for I believe.

Well true John! and totally agree with you

But I have to say tho I hardly use photo shop! just a bit of curves ads and some times a bit of colour ads!

but every thing you can do in photo shop you use to do in the darkroom!
just took a lot more skill and time and cost paper and chems etc

Rob is having a steady flow of pictures in but if you are intending to enter a picture or two for the competition, please send them to him at the address in the first post with a copy of the application form as soon as you can, to allow him time to print and mount the images prior to the day.

All photos must be created by the entrant and must be pre entered by Friday 23rd July

I emailed mine last night, but haven't received a confirmation. Same happened last year and my photos weren't entered in the competition :( How soon after submitting should I receive email confirmation of receipt?

will all the photos of a given category be together?

I recall last year they were all mixed up which made it harder to vote for them

Applications to enter the photographic competition have now closed, so I hope you got your pictures to us in time.

Come along and vote for your favourite pictures when the images are displayed at MGF15.

The top 12 pictures will be part of the MGF Register calendar in 2011 so vote wisely.

Judging by some of the photographs posted on the forum throughout the year I'm expecting a very high standard this year. There have been some fantastic pictures. Should be a hotly contested competition.

Looking forward to seeing the entries. :thumbsu:
