Hard Top Fitment Issue

Post by katykim » Thu Nov 27, 2014 4:19 pm

Hi
New to forum!
I have an R reg Abingon and have just removed the soft top and attempted to put the hard top on - I wasn't very successful so I asked my local garage (who are good) to have a go for me.
It's much better but it won't fit exactly on one side.
Any suggestions please on who I can take it to.
I'm based Worcestershire.
I have bought bits from We Love MGF's in Walsall and thought I might ask them to help?
Many thanks
Katrina

You say that you "have removed the soft-top" Have you "removed" it or folded it back. This is because the Original MGR hardtop sits on the rear rail of the soft-top.
If you have folded the soft-top, then on each side at the rear you should have a curved platform on a bracket and a seat on the hardtop to fit on it together with an overcentre clamp. Are the platforms and seats aligned ??.
Our car has the soft-top completely removed and the hardtop sits on a rear rail from a scrap top.

That's a really good idea...might look into that

The few times i fitted my hardtop i never removed the hood. It was folded back ans the hardtop fitted like a glove, no leaks nothing. Only problem i did have was it was too warm with it on! :-) never mind

Hi and welcome to the forum

As said above, the hard top clips to part of the soft top frame.

Actually they are LH & RH brackets which fit under the frame bolt heads. They can be fitted incorrectly.

so the chances are that they were removed when the soft top was removed.

Just a quick word of advice.

If you have a plastic rear screen it should be unzipped and laid flat on the parcel shelf before the soft top is folded for the winter. If a glass rear screen has been fitted then this is not necessary.

Just joined here and just fitted my hard top today.
As photo shows bracket is inside of mounting plates and both leaning forward, they can be swung around before tightening fully to find the hard top clips so they line up. So don't tighten the top larger bolt and nut and lower smaller stud and nut untill this is done. There is adjustment on the hard top rear mounting face as there is at the front clips. All being well the hard top should sit true then :-)
