Trip to Scotland

Post by Sven » Thu Feb 05, 2009 8:41 am

Hi all,

first of all i'd like to introduce myself. My name is Sven, and i'm from germany. Someone may allready know me, i've posted a few times at the old F-Register board, and also met some of you back at the "Treffen'05" in the black forrest.

We (a F, my TF an 4 people) plan to visit Scotland later this year (should be 24.August - 10.September). So we'd like to ask if there's by coincident some meeting or a tour we'd have to join.

And of course the qustion if theres anything to visit that doesn't stand in our tourist guide.

Any comment would be much appreciated.

Hi Sven

Nice to hear from you again - Scotland is a beautiful country and the scenery alone is well worth the visit as of course are the distilleries :thumbsu:

I am sure that the Scottish lads and lasses will be along soon to advise what to do and what to see.

Sven,

Can't help you out with any tours during your visit - too far ahead to have anything planned. Also, some of us intend to visit Wales during August / September so I can't make any promises that I'll be at home. However, if I can be of any help planning your trip feel free to contact me at dc@csmgf.co.uk. You might also want to visit the CSMGF website ( http://www.csmgf.co.uk )to see lots of pictures taken on different Runs over the years.

p.s. Some more pictures that I've taken over the years at -

@David: Just watched your pics. I think it was a mistake, as by now i just can't stop thinking of the holidays to come :D
Think it's a great landscape, really looks beautyfull. As we talked some times in the past about going to scotland i just don't understand why we didn't manage that earlier.

If someone knows a nice tour that we could include in our planings, or even wants to join us for a day or two, it would be great.

So, by now we have a slight idea of where we want to go. Also we'll think to take the change to visit Kempenrit.
This is what we've planned so far:
http://www.mgtf.de/events/scotland2009/scotland.html

Any tips for the tour? Any comments?
Next we'll try to fix the route, then get some B&Bs for the nights. So if there's anything nearby that you know of...

Thanks,
Sven

Sven,

I'm sorry to tell you that the route that you've chosen from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Inverness is pretty dull and uninteresting and unless you particularly want to see Islay I think that you could spend your time better going further north. If it's distilleries that you want to see and that's why you are going to the islands then there are plenty on the mainland. The west coast has some of the most dramatic scenery and some of the best driving roads in Britain and I would suggest that you maybe consider some of the roads that we used on the last couple of "Over The Top Tours". West is definitely best.

I would second Davids remarks regarding the roads of Scotland and the pass to and from Applecross is quite interesting

Also do remember that many of the roads are single track so allow extra time - especially if you get stuck behind your fellow countrymen in their ubiquitous motor homes normally travelling in convoy

hi to all,

im the second driver.

Adrian will know me from Tour de Lux last year. i thnk some of you will go to Lux this year. So we will meet us at Lux to.

Did you think Dunnottar Castel and Kinnairds Head are only for the gormless tourists? A must see at every organized trip.
I think you mean that we could find some places like these at the westcoast of scottland.

Jep, we will remember the chees homes, the scourge of modern humanity. :)

and here are some pictures from our yearly trip to south tirol:

Image
passes are good if the have an altitude difference more than 1 mile. ;)

Image
small roads did we know to. :)

Lars,

The two things that Scotland is not short of is castles and distilleries. It doesn't really matter what part of the country you go to, there will be some of both to see. I always find this a useful site (click on the map to the right and then on a place name) -

@Ted/David: Thanks for the input. We'll sit together next sunday and check if we erase the eastcoast from our tour. Davids tours look nice.
About Islay we have to talk again, i love the Islaywhiskys, so it would be very nice to stop there. But maybe we could go for only one night.

So... our trip is coming closer.
Sad to tell you that Lars can't come with us, so only my brother and me will do the trip in my TF. Here's the latest list of waypoints, but only Edingburgh and Islay are really fix booked, the rest is just an idea and may vary one or two days, according to weather, sightseeing and what ever comes our way. So if any of you think they would have a little time for a meet & greet, or even a short trip, feel free to contact me.
