Yet another paint job.

Post by tanamana » Sun Jun 02, 2013 10:44 am

Car is going in tomorrow, to Insignia Coachworks in Poole.
The bonnet has yet another bad case of dandruff, lacquer flaking off like there is no tomorrow.
I am getting rather tired of this.

Good luck. Even after mine was done locally by a good body shop, it still suffers somewhat but nowhere near as bad after 2 years or more. I keep on top of it now with a spot of touch up paint they supplied and a small brush. I think the only solution to this is flatting back to the bare metal/plastic as I am sure most places are simply flatting the existing paint and laying fresh over that, so the sub-layer is still brittle and not holding properly. It would also help if they laid on a coat of similar colour primer as it would not be so obvious.

I have never had such a love/hate relationship with a car as I have with the LE500. Stupid issues like this take the shine off literally what is an otherwise brilliant car.

Hi, Nigel.
Gary only wants it for a couple of days, so if the warmish sunshine holds it should harden up nicely
by the end of the week.
Collected my pipes yet ? 8-)

Not to mince my words - the lacquer is absolutely crap. If MG Motor had any sense of what good customer service should be, they would sort this out for me ASAP, and free, too.

I won't be happy if this happens again.

Would it be worth investing in a bonnet bra. You could probably get one in the same colour as your car if yiu spoke to a trimmer.

Speak to Gary tomorrow but I think he said it looked like Seawards had just painted over the old lacquer...

I am sure Gary will do a great job. I don't think a bonnet bra would be of much use, as the dodgy paintwork goes all the way up the bonnet to near the window. I did look into it a couple of years back while waiting for the first respray, but there were none that would fit my car. Plus, they are godawful anyway. :-|

Clear vinyl over the paint when you've finally got it looking decent.
