Hello all, and a quick question

Post by generalkelly » Sun Jan 10, 2010 6:52 pm

Hell there, I'm new to this forum and to mgf ownership. I've said my hello's in the main 'new member' section but as I'm living in Llanelli, S. Wales I thought I'd post a hello here as well.

I'm very happy with my mgf and she seems to be running fine but as I'm by no means competent at car mechanics I'd like to get someone qualified to have a good look and point out anything that needs doing. I'd like to get an mg specialist to do this rather than my local mechanic and was wondering if there is such a thing as mg specialists in our neck of the woods? If there is I'd be grateful if you could let me know whereabouts so I can get in touch with them.

Thanks again, Regards.

Hi there and welcome.

If you pop over to see us at http://www.swmgf.org.uk, or more particularly our local forum linked from the website here, then I'm sure some of the locals will be able to help and make some suggestions. Me - I'm the wrong side of the water :D

There's nothing "sadly" about it Colin, there's more happening on a small, local, friendly forum. It's human nature

But you are right in that there seems to be far fewer posts since the F Reg forum was "re-arranged", sadly ;)

As to the original question, the deafening silence seems to indicate a lack of experienced service centres almost anywhere. Since the demise of MG-R, there are only occasional areas of good service. Personally, I wouldn't trust most of them to change a light bulb  Don't forget the F/TF is quiet old, the manufacturer has gone bust, and most garages don't like working on them. Unless you're very lucky and have someone nearby who is half decent, the rest of the population have to take their chance, or roll sleeves up

Sorry!

Welcome to the Forum :thumbsu:

There are some good MGF/TF specialists around the country but local to you as you asked for is another question. Most areas can come up with a suggestion of who you could use to check your car out so hopefully someone local to you will be able to help you out.

I say "sadly" Jerry as by keeping yourselves to yourselves everyone misses out!

People who have yet to find SWMGF but find here first, see an inactive part of the forum and could (wrongly) conclude that there is nothing happening for them in Wales, when in actual fact SWMGF is alive and kicking!

Those of us on here miss out on the friendly chit chat and advice that you (the majority of SWMGF members) could bring to here.

SWMGF miss out as most of your events aren't advertised on here so you miss potential people who could join in on SWMGF events. This is another way that people on here (but not also on SWMGF) also miss out.

Hmmm

Colin half the time i look in on this forum and i do daily quite a few times you are the only one on here and can understand how you won the award for posting most threads and posts, most of these posts by the way just pointing to MGCC Centre events and not actual MGF/TF Register events and sometimes i don't get that at all and don't think i 'm on my own thinking same, this forum is not and has not gone quiet by any South Wales Register members or SWMGF members new or old and in any way by my doing or any suggestion from me that they should not look in or post anything,we can't make people look in and post here, if you ask many of them as you know most of them they will tell you exactly why they don't look in very often anymore or perhaps not even at all now,and it's not just a Welsh thing,i know we have our own forum and website for our area as a few of the area reps on here do as well,it's just the way things have gone and evolved, the Register is not what it was in many ways for me but i still have a soft spot in my heart for it,new members may well register in look in here and see it's just too quiet and look for somewhere else like -Org,it's not that they may find the Register before SWMGF either, many find us before here, and i ask all if they woud like to join the MGCC and auto become Register member, most SWMGF events are advertised on here or where before i left for short while, some come from Register some don't,we manage with how we do things and it works very well,Register members are welcome on SWMGF runs/meets anytime, where were they all for our Ian Pogson Night in Cardiff? where were they all for Welsh Weekender?Where were they all for our Abingdon fund raiser?r and so on, all SWMGF runs and meets were all put on here before i deleted everything when i left last summer.
Reason is although Register has huge membership not evertone can make every rum meet or whatever, it's peoples choice, we put an awful lot of hard work and spend lots of money and time doing recci's and if people come great if they don't not much we can do about it, but most who come on our runs/events don't come because they have seen it advertised on here,i know because when we have a list of names of run we doing on here rarely do we have a name added on here apart from yourself perhaps, also all SWMGF/Register runs meets in our area are always on our website for all to see at swmgf.org.uk that's my twopenneth Col and what's that old say? if things don't change they will stay as they are,Dave

(My excuse is I moved geographically so my posts moved to the Midland Section ;) )

Welcome General Kelly!

My F and I lived in Swansea until last year ... regretably I cannot make any recommendations for a specialist MG garage local to you but no doubt someone will be a along to help you out soon.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your F... long may it continue :D

So far this thread has not helped out the orginal poster who was looking for a local mechanic near to Llanelli. This can really only be done by someone local. It is a pity no one in South Wales is offering any advice on this. That is not a good way to welcome new members to the forum.

As far as your comments Dave, the MGF Regional reps should be keeping their regional area on here up to date with local events happening in their area, be they Register, MGCC events or even anything interesting going on in their area. This does not seem to be happening in many areas. In my opinion, just asking people to visit any 'local website or forum is not playing the game.

Keith, that's not really fair. No one we know lives near Llanelli, but as said above, a deadening silence speaks volumes - unfortunately :(
Generalkelly has popped up on http://www.swmgf.org.uk, but still no one can help. It's a shame that there are so few MG nutters on these forums, there must be loads of owners out there with a recommendation to make that we can't reach :( The chances of finding a "MG mechanic" are very few and far between (Techspeed/Mike Satur etc), and Wales does not have a single entry in the MG CC approved traders listing :o

Keith, as to the F Register, it does seem a sad fact that not many people post on here any more, but then again, as you say, there are vast swathes of the country with no involvement at all. With the www, the genie is out of the bottle, and people will very naturally congregate to local, friendly groups. I have to admit I'm not the slightest bit interested what's going on in Yorkshire, and I bet the same is true in reverse  That's not sad or wrong, just natural human nature, as I can't trawl web sites for a living.
In a way, it may have been preferable to have just a single page, like the MG CC site, where all F/TF stuff can be accessed, but it's too late now.
Anyway, I'm sure people who want to travel to join up with some old friends for events will find out themselves - speaking of which I'm sure we'll meet up at Stoneleigh and have a good chat ;)

Can't say much more than Jerry has really,i've never actually been to LLanelli myself and do you know it's 65 miles from where i live, but i would have given advice if i knew,as mentioned generalkelly has has come onto our swmgf forum and seems we haven't yet another member from that area to help him out.

my reaction on my post is that i thought or think Col was having a bit of a pop at me and my fault things are slow on South Wales part of this forum, i will and do adverise things as SWMGF and Register but can't hold a gun to peoples head to come on Register forum
