VISIT OF "PICTON CASTLE" TALL SHIP TO IPSWICH WATERFRONT
A working tall ship, the Barque "Picton Caste" will be sailing into Ipswich, where she was berthed nearly 20 years ago, in September.
Based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, the stately square rigger has just completed an epic 2,800 mile crossing of the North Atlantic and will be in Ipswich as part of a 10 month tour of ports in Europe, Africa and the West Indies.
"Picton Castle" has a rich history. Built in 1928, originally as a motorised trawler, she "joined" the Royal Navy as a minesweeper for the Second World War. After the conflict she became a freighter. In the early 90's she was discovered, in terrible condition, in Norway by her current Captain, Dan Moreland, who, with a small crew, worked their way perilously to Canada [including a stay in Ipswich] where she was completely refitted and converted to sail - "like a caterpillar undergoing metamorphosis."
"Picton Castle" is due to sail up the Orwell on the 5th September and, courtesy of the Captain and crew, will be open to the public from 6th-9th September before setting sail again on the 10th.
More details will be available here nearer the time.
