Hi everyone, I have made a rash purchase and bought an MGF - it was literally cheap and chips so I am of course now massively paronoid it is going to die on me..I have only just got home with it.

So far the engine management light has come on, I was told this may happen as apparently it has before and the code reader said a fault on the lamda sensor, I intend on buying a code reader and seeing if that is the case again.

I also think it sounds a bit rumbly at various speeds sort of CV/ wheel bearing type but I have never had or driven one of these before so might be me going mad, is there specialist in the area who I could get to look over the car for me? I am pretty happy tackling most work myself but have no experience of this model so would appreciate someone who is familar to take a look.

I intend to service and sort it since it has come with no real history but the MOT's back up the low mileage of 41k. I drove it home (150miles) got stuck in traffic and the temp needle never wavered and it felt rock solid on the motorway - noisy arnt they!.

I am in Ipswich Suffolk and its a 2001, VVC now to hit google and see what reader I need, thank in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Barneyrubble,

Try Kerridges in Needham Market if you need service and repair work, or just some parts or advice. They are still MG dealers and they always have a lot of interesting sports cars to see when you visit (Nobles, TVRs etc. as well as MGs).

Hi and welcome to the forum

Your car, being a mk1 VVC will not be OBD2 compliant, you will need a T4 MG/Rover workshop computer or a www.pscan.eu scanner.

Thanks - It being 2001 I thought this was a mk2, or do I have that wrong?

Best Regards

Hi there,

Welcome

Unfortunately I am also new to the MGF world (although have owned other mg's previously), so trying to keep up with common faults and issues etc.

However, I am around the braintree area and also have an X reg mk1 mgf (not vvc tho). Hopefully once both ur cars are running smooth then we will be able to attend some meets.

I have assumed it is a mk1 as it has the earlier orange indicators. Do you have a mechanical or electronic milometer, is the ECU (visible through the hatch in the boot) wedge or square which are better indicators of it being mk1 or mk2.

Sorry missed your reply, electronic milometer. I think the ECU is visible.

Hi there, sorry you haven't left a name, welcome to the forum.

As it has been said Kerridge's in Needham Market has been around for years and are well respected.

If you fancy a trip to the west you can call up Steve Tyler at British Legends here in Southend on 01702 511123, he looks after all of our cars, he's a Club member and knows his stuff.

As James has said, your car, being a MY2000 MK2 should have clear front indicators not orange, they were fitted only to the MY1995 MK1's.

Good luck with the car, it looks nice in the picture. Please remember to send your cars details for our database, you can do this from the home page, "register your car with us".
