Arctic Circle Run

Post by Seantf » Tue Oct 07, 2008 7:38 pm

Scarlet Fever has posted this on the main forum anybody up for it ?

I am going to give it a go :thumbsu:

Scarlet Fever wrote: After the laugh we had trial running this in February this year, I've decided to run it again.

In true Harrods Christmas Advert style...

The Date... February 6th 2009.

The Time... 12:00 midnight.

The Place... Thurrock Services.

The objective is a complete lap of the M25, with the hood down - now you know why it's called the Arctic Circle Run! It's fliipin' freezing!! But a good laugh. This is the only time the M25 is fun to drive.

Notes

- The F/TF heater is good, but not good enough for this lunacy. Minimum 3 layers, hat, gloves & thick socks.
- Thermos Flask of hot drink is also recommended (although drinking it while driving probably isn't a good idea!)
- Unzip your rear screens and take great care when lowering the hood - the plastic goes brittle at low temps and can split.
- A complete lap is 120 miles, we travel anti-clockwise from Thurrock so that we can all blast through the Dartford tunnel at 2am together!
- Jams are very unlikely, few roadworks at this time of the morning/year and very little other traffic, last time we made it around without stopping, hopefully the A2 roadworks section no longer has the diversion so a complete lap should be possible.
- It's not a race, just an unbelievably rare chance to enjoy the most infamous motorway with a group of other mad MG people.

--------------------------------------------------------

This will be an F Register backed run, depending on numbers. If more than 12 people interested then it'll go through the official channels and i'll get some rally plates etc made up (for a nominal charge). If less than 12 i'll run it as an Essex Roadsters independent event and it'll be free.

Also, It would be good to do this as a relay, in so far as the HEAT wheels group could start from South Mimms at say 12:40am and join the convoy and the SEF crew could join us at say 1:30am at Clacketts Lane so that we all blast the Dartford Tunnel together - this way everyone does the tunnel at once, we all do a complete lap, but no one has to double back on themselves and do sections more than once.

Thought we better bump this up a bit :D

The web-page for the event is here: http://mgfregister.org/mgpitfiles/Arcti ... n%2009.htm

The web-page for just-giving is here: http://www.justgiving.com/mgfregister (Link to this link on the link above has the wrong email address at the mo.)

I presume most of us will be starting from South Mimms.

Meet up at 10:00 for a 10:30 depart.

I reckon that we should meet up in the car park fairly near the entrance to the services if we can - that way we can get a nice warm cuppa before we leave:

Image

If we are not near the entrance to the services, we will probably be near the entrance to the car park instead. I am gambling on the services not being too busy, but either way I doubt we will miss each other.

I can't predict what the parking will be like so, if that doesn't work out, just look for an enclave of F/TF's in the car park :D

Click here to see it on Google maps and plot your route to the services.

Please add your name here if you are planning to join us at South Mimms (I've picked up some from the main thread, so let me know if they need changing):

1) Jon
2) Sean & Claire
3) Soo & Andy
4) Debs
5) Reaper
6) Dave & Trish
7) John + 1 (Wife and son currently fighting over it. I'll bring the winner. )
8) Joyce and Jonathan (tail-end-char-lee) M3 maybe south mimms?

I don't venture in here very often so didn't realise you had a thread about this on the go. We're driving up from Southampton and aiming to get to South Mimms for the start at around 2145-2200 so we can grab a hot drink before we start. Looking forward to meeting up with you guys.

========================

Don't know what the whether is like elsewhere, but it has been pretty poor in Cambridgeshire today. I only braved going into work today at about 12:00 when most of the traffic had died down. There was 3+ inches of snow on SLF this morning :thumbsd: Glad I re-proofed the hood last weekend. Neighbours must have thought i was mad being out in the cold weather, but the hood was super dry once the snow was off :thumbsu:

There is a possibility that this could be postponed to the following week, so keep an eye on the thread on the main forum.

If there is anyone that lives close to South Mimms, it would be useful if you could provide us with an update tomorrow afternoon.

Although I suspect that the issue may not be the M25, but rather getting to the M25

Cheers

Jon

The Arctic Circle Run has been postponed to next Friday 13th, due to adverse weather conditions

Click here for more information on the main forum.

I think that it is for the best. Andy had to make a tough decision, but it was the right one. We don't want people having any accidents this evening.

Here's looking forward to next Friday :thumbsu:
