Hi Everyone,

just wanted to announce my arrival as a relatively new MGF owner and therefore member of the club.

I recently bought a low mileage (16k) 1996 1.8 MGF at auction and am very much enjoying tinkering about with it. I'm building up the courage to replace the head gasket. No sign of failure, but no evidence of it ever being replaced either, so probably worth doing for peace of mind.

I've also booked my place at MGF25 in July and looking forward to that and perhaps some more local events during the year!

Best regards,

Ian.

Hi and welcome to the forum Ian

I am firmly in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" camp.

Unless there are signs of HGF I would leave it well alone.

Thanks for your responses, much appreciated.

I haven't taken too many pictures yet, but do have this one from when I picked it up.

I decided to change the brake fluid last week as looking a little dark and no evidence of it having been changed within the last 20 years. This made me take a closer look at the tyres. Loads of tread and no visible signs of ageing, however the rear tyres had a date code going back to 1995, just before it rolled out of the factory. Time to change them I think!

Will hold off changing the head gasket for now - but don't think I'll be able to resist it forever.

Ian.
