Spares in South West / West
Hi All,
I'm new to the register, and just picked up my first MGF.
I've been looking at them for ages and thought I'd grab a toy, and do it by way of a 'cheapy' and give myself a bit of a project............. but I guess they all are!!!
I am bassed in Shaftesbury (Dorset) and would love suggestions and advice on where the best local source of parts are please?
I've broken into my 40's and have been in the motor trade all my working life, from origianlly on the spanners through to parts supply at all levels. Factors through to Manufactures, so I know the usual factors and have a reasonable level of mechanics............. despite now knowing some of what I learn't in my City and Guilds was actually wrong!! lol
I'd also love to know more on the local meets and members please..... time is never in abundance but I'd love to get chance to enjoy the new MGF when I can.
Regards,
Dave.

Welcome Hilly, I'm not too far away from you.
Hope you enjoy your "project"
As for spares, have you tried any local breakers? Langfords were recommended to me although I havent been out there yet. Also I think FJ Chalke at Gillingham still do MG Rover stuff
We have monthly meets you are welcome to attend but I think they might be a tad too far for you. We do have one in Wincanton soon though.
I'm sure others will be along soon with more advice
I will keep my eyes open for you on my travels
Stu

Re: Spares in South West / West
Hi Dave,
Welcome to the MGF Register, the West of England Region and the world of MGF ownership. As Stu mentioned our meetings tend to be biased towards Somerset as that where most of our members are. However, we can always look to move our monthly meetings to a more central position depending on the location of members. On 21 March we are meeting near Wincanton, or you may like to join us on 21 February with a trip to the MG Show and Spares Day at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Full details of our meetings and events that we will be attending can be found here on the forum, or you can always drop me an email (link below) or PM.
Hope to meet you soon,
Nigel

Re: Spares in South West / West
Hi Stu & Nigel,
Thanks for your replies and welcomes guys!!
I'll maybe pop down to see Robin & Paul at langfords as they are only about 5 mins from me. I've not been there for years and would be well chuffed if they had such goodies........ but I reckon costly
F.J Chalke is an interesting one, not only because I didn't realise they were still likely to have anything, but for the fact my Dad was there stores manager back in the BMC days (60's I think) in Mere!!! I thought they went from Gillingham several years ago though, or did they just re-locate. I'll take hunt around as again, only 5 mins for me.
Distance for the meets is cool for me guys as I've been driving over 40,000 miles a year for the last 20 years for work, in sales in the motor parts supplies game, but the specialist guys are few and far between and not usually well known to the main stream all makes part companies. And to be honest, whilst I'm normally treading the motorways in the usual Germanic Audi or BMW's, I am very impressed with just how comfortable I've found the MGF.
Meet at Wincanton? would it be the Hunters Lodge lilke most other meets around there?
My F is off to the garage this week as it has the mother of all water leaks!!! I drops the header tank in about an hour just stood up! The car runs and drives well and heater and Temp guage are fine, so fingers crossed it's just the water pump by the looks of it, but I'll get both belts and tensioner done at the same time. It's a job I'd usually do myself but as it's so hard to get to and the F's marraige with the K series such a 'Steamy One' I thought I'd shell out and get it done for me this time around! I't had the head gasket done within the last 20k as a result of a belt failiure, and a new rad and one of the hoses since then.
What's the best way / place to get the cars valued guys?? This job is going to coast me I guess about £250 ish and I'd like to have a good idea if I've bought right!!! Mines a Aug 96 P plate , quite tidy and not at all taty with 65K on the clock. I picked it up for £800................ sound ok?
Hope to catch you all soon!
Dave.

Hi Dave,
just a thought, I am always amazed what goodies AE Wilcox out at Wickwar still have / can find.
Your best bet is to talk to John Wilcox http://www.aewilcox.co.uk/

Hi Dave
Yes thats correct, Hunters do a mean Mixed Grill
Chalkes are now next to Autotechnics (I think) near Dextra in Gillingham. So Langfords are not cheap then?
We are going up to MG Show at Stoneleigh later ths month if you fancy it.

Hi Stu,
We used to use Hunters for bike meets too!! And funnily enough. it was the first place I saw a Durex machine as a young boy in the 70's!!
I'll let you know if Langfords are dear after I've been down. In truth, I reckon most scrap yards. sorry, 'Vehicle Reclimation Facilities' like thier cash, but it's been a good 15 years since I've been to one, but let's hope e-bay has kept them all real!!! I'll check Chalks out too.
Hi Colin,
Cheers for the link mate!
Guys, I might do Stoneliegh too!!
When and wehere is the next local meet?
Dave.
P.S. Had a laugh tonight when I saw the look on my wifes face as me and my 3 yr old lad carried up my inner wing linners to wash them in the bath!!! LOL

Re: Spares in South West / West
Dave,
I've found eBay to be a good source of parts ~ Picked up a set of brand new wheels for less than 1 wheel would cost from Xpart (see end of this thread viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3943), a tonneau cover which was like new for about a 1/3 of the dealer price, a windstop for about half the price of a new one and a 52mm throttle body for well under the price of a new one.
Hopefully see you on the trip to Stoneleigh or at the Hunters Lodge next month.
Nigel

Re: Spares in South West / West
Hi All,
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the welcoomes, and avice on my recent F purchase!
I wanted to let you know she is all sorted now!
Luckily, it was the water pump as I thought, so go that done, but got both belts and tensioner done whilst it was apart!
Even better............ I got £100 back from the dealer I got it from(when the cheaque arrives!) So the car has now only ended up costing £700 in the first place..... and the work this week cost me £286, I'm really rather pleased!!!
Now it's to work on all the bits and pieces I want to get done (list as long as BOTH of my arms!!!!)........... Perhaps I'll start a story thread going on it?
I must get a picture uploaded too!!
Regards to you all, I'm not sure if I can make it to Stoneliegh next week but I'm hoping to link up with you all soon.
Dave.
