Another Natter that Matters ?????

Post by colintf » Sun Oct 06, 2013 11:13 am

Just thinking aloud really!

Basically, a gathering is planned somewhere and people make their own way, there taking as long as they like and booking their own accomadation etc. From memory (rightly or wrongly) the last one was held in Monaco.

I was thinking maybe its time for another

I was thinking maybe next August at The Oldtimer Grand Prix, or maybe in the Alps

or

2015 Mid May (the Sunday after Mille Miglia) having a table booked at Via Roma (Pizzeria and Restaurant) in the Italian seaside resort or Finale Ligure http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finale_Ligure. This is located less than 90 minutes away from Monaco

I know the family that own Via Roma and know that we would be well looked after. I also know a couple of Hotels there to suit different budgets and with car parking.

People could have 3 options : -
1. just tarvel down for The Natter That Matters (NTM)
2. See the Mille Miglia (based around the Lakes / Brescia etc) and then back towards NTM
3. Do NTM and then have time down around the Lakes etc

Or, we could really push the boat out and maybe meet on the Island of Krk just inside Croatia!

Anyone any ideas, views etc etc ?? 8-)

A major requirement of NTM was that it could be reached in a single drive if time was short. But like the sound of this even if May 2015 is a long way off. Maybe a NTM 'old style',bit like a "Kaffenbak" rather earlier? AS WELL.

Colin - as I recall, the first NTM was the trip to Monaco in 2005, which was the result of a chance conversation between a group of us including Rob Bell, Bob Larcombe, Neil (whose surname I can't recall) and others in a pub in Brackley after the Silverstone 80 event in 2004 (the year of the infamous SWMGF barbecue...!!!). This was followed by the trip to Angouleme in 2006.

The only 'arrangement' was that everyone would meet at the appointed venue on the specified date at the specified time. If it's planned to do something similar in 2015, then potentially count us in :)

I'm not certain about John's comment about being driveable in one hit?!!! On the two events above it was open to individuals to make whatever travel arrangements they wanted. Some made a two week break of it, and others just a couple of days, but everyone met up at the appointed time and place and a good time was had by all :D

Bring it on!

Your timings are correct Mike but (I believe) Bob and Neil (Sutton) drove to Monaco in a single hit. Possibly started from the military habit of meeting up with old friends - a bit Ice Cold In Alex.

The idea of the NTM was to pick a venue in a far flung place and hold a "natter". How you got there and where you stayed was up to you - you could go down in one blast or take several days - it didn't matter as long as you met up for the "natter".

2005 NTM1 - Café de Paris Monaco - http://www.mgfregister.org/mgpitfiles/sef/monaco05.htm

2006 NTM2 - Le restaurant de Bois, Angouleme http://www.mgfregister.org/mgpitfiles/NTM2/NTM2.htm

2007 NTM3 - Al Filo Restaurant, Bormio http://www.mgfregister.org/mgpitfiles/n ... 3/ntm3.htm

You can see the concept by checking the above links

Bob & Neil were instrumental in coming up with the concept but didn't actually come to the first one in Monaco ! We were the only ones to do all three, Neil came to 2 and 3 but Bob only made it to 3 in his Caterham 7!

Like John, my recollection was that Bob and Neil had done Monaco with Neil finishing work on a Friday and being back for Monday morning!

That said, I can't find any pics of them at the event and I although I don't have any specific recollection of them being there now, seem to think that their escapade was a recce for their idea that eventually turned into reality? :)

Stills and video were posted by Bob & Neil. Prompted the 2005 Monaco NTM. Bob proposed it but then couldn't get away - his country needed him elsewhere.

Yes I think that is right Mike & JP - Bob & Neil did Monaco in 2004 on their own and were going to do it again in 2005 but couldn't. There were quite a few drop outs for that first one I seem to remember resulting in only four cars going in the end. Whilst three crews are still around we never saw Roger Middleton after that !

In 2005 we didn't know anything about NTMs but coincidently we had taken the blue TF to the south of France and although we didn't know that the NTM in Monaco was happening we were only 70 miles away in Port Grimaud at the time!! We did make the other 2 though & went back to Angouleme last year for the racing & would suggest the area around Angouleme for another NTM at sometime.
