Re: 1914 -18 Great War Commemoration Tour
Here's a few details from the flyer I have :
It's called the Yser Frontline & Ypres Salient, based in Nieuwpoort from the 3rd - 5th May 2014. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of WW1 the MGCC Belgium is organising an International Commemoration Weekend. Nieuwpoort is only 80km from Calais and 35km from Dunkerque so it's ideal for the experienced Euro traveller and the novice so I suggest you may like to consider this event. The fee for the two days, Saturday and Sunday is €84.50 and for the additional runs to Poperinge or Moorslede on the Monday it's €89.50. An evening ferry back from Dunkerque on the Monday will finish the weekend nicely.
It is supported by the City of Nieuwpoort and the Provincial Government of West Flanders so a very co-operative weekend will be ensured.
Saturday morning registration is from 09-00 to 12-00 so we can get an early ferry, it's about 30 minutes from Dunkerque, 55 minutes from Calais, from 12-00 until 18.00 you will take part in a touring route around Nieuwpoort and from 21-30 until 23.30 speeches, drinks, dancing fountains with laser show and music will finish the day. This of course will be a long day as we have to drive to Dover or Folkestone for the Channel crossing so you may like to travel over on Friday night and stay locally or at one of the many cheap hotels outside the port of Dunkerque (Campanile is a favourite).
Sunday morning will see an 89km run around the frontline and the salient and the evening will be finalised at 20.00 at the Menin Gate for the Last Post under the great arch (as it is every night), those of us that have been there will tell you it's very poignant and humbling.
I'm entering now and hopefully I'll have an idea of a reasonable hotel in Nieuwpoort soon should we all want to stay together.

If you need any help with the hotels give me a shout, my missus loves to find the best for the smallest prices through places like booking.com. She has a knack of finding good deals, like xmas in Swansea (I know, but we go to see the grand kids) for 29.00 UKP a night for a double room and its a very clean and reasonable hotel .

Re: 1914 -18 Great War Commemoration Tour
Is there anywhere MG's can be rented to attend this event. Very expensive to ship a car or two for a couple of weeks touring!!
Ths tour sounds very interesting considering that our colony " Newfoundland" sacrificed so many soldiers during WW1 in Belgium and France. So much that we have dedicated monuments in locations in Belgium and France!
See this webpage for a little more info if interested: http://www.rnfldr.ca/history.aspx?item=178

Was thinking about that but getting insurance coverage seems to be an issue when you come from Canada!colintf wrote:Some Australian friends this year bought a MG in the uk to tour around in and then sold it when it was time to go homemgfsoldier wrote:I have looked for the barracks accomodation. Re: 1914 -18 Great War Commemoration Tour
Clive, I use the same web-site at times too, it's pretty accurate and reliable.
We have decided to arrive on Friday evening as Saturday will be a 20+ hour day if we start the journey in the morning so can the missus track down something nice for the three nights and we will leave for home on Monday evening. Is it possible to do both Monday tours as I would like to see Poperinge properly and I really don't know Moorslede at all. We always go for good off road parking even if we have to pay extra.
I fancy the Friday 14.00 Dover - Dunkerque and the 18.00 return on Monday.
I have e mailed the Essex Roadsters and the Anglia Centre committee and passed on the details and the links.

Re: 1914 -18 Great War Commemoration Tour
Two Canadians arranged for their UK friend to buy and sell 2 MGFs for the 2013 EOTY in Aviemore so it is definitely doable.terreneuve wrote:Is there anywhere MG's can be rented to attend this event. Very expensive to ship a car or two for a couple of weeks touring!!

Re: 1914 -18 Great War Commemoration Tour
John, as an alternative, how about hiring an MG3 or an MG6 then driving it over with us. Enterprise in the UK are renting out 6's (maybe too early for a 3 ?)

I am going to look into that too, but I know someone who tried to book a MG6 with Enterprise and when he went to pick it up they apologized for not having one and they gave him some Ford product!!
If I can find the right car I may just buy one if I can get it insured!!
