MG Norway Treffen

Post by adrianclifford » Fri Feb 28, 2014 4:13 pm

Dawn and I along with Neil and Barbara are taking on the Norway Treffen this August, the planning has been going on for months now. Originally it was to be a pre-EEOTY trip but we are staying in Norway touring for two weeks with Steinar and his friends from MG Norway. We will be staying in ex NATO air bases, nice hotels, posh camping (log cabins) and cooking our own BBQ's some evenings. The routes we are taking are truly stupendous, Steinar has sent us so many links to some of the roads we will use, such as this one which arrived today :

Trollstigen, Norway

Risk Factor: If the monsters don’t get you along this highway — the name literally translates to “Troll’s Path” — the curves on this road certainly will. The route is known for its 11 hair-raising hairpin turns and steep, 9% gradient. Yet despite the dangers of the one-lane road, it’s become a popular tourist attraction, hosting thousands of brave drivers every year before it closes each winter.

Why you might be tempted to drive it anyway: You definitely shouldn’t take your eyes off this road while you’re driving, but if you do you can catch a glimpse of the impressive Kongen (King), Dronningen (Queen), and Bispen (Bishop) mountains, or stop at the 320-metre Stigfossen waterfall.

The very curvy Trollstigen. Picture: Flickr Vironevaech

Looks a bit like the Stelvio . I think we may have to drive this a couple of times, it looks so good :thumbsu:

A good read for this Tour is the Insight Guide - Norway. Do not miss the Seafood Market in Bergen and I doubt Neal and Barbara will return without taking the Buffet at The Union in Geiranger.
After the Norway EOTY, Barbara was going back with or without Neal. Ann & I have already had our return.

Cheers Adrian - NOT.

We really fancied this trip but (as you probably know) we had serious family illness problems and couldn't commit to anything that would have kept us too far from home. Our choice. Sadly now resolved.

I look forward to seeing the pictures later.

yes John, we know you wanted to join us, we'll miss you both, you know that.

Steinar is adding flesh to the bones now with more trip details, here's another example he's sent me :

The "Lyse" road.

27 hairpins. What you see on the picture is about 8 kilometer road, plus a long tunnel. The road was opened in 1984 and climb from sea level to about 930 meter above sea level. We are doing the road first down to the sea and so return up again and over the mountain to Telemark. The road is closed during the winter. (To me it looks almost vertical :? )

Hope we don't meet anything coming the other way  (I'm sure we won't be leading this one).

I'm not too sure who else is coming from the UK, originally Stu & Mel were but I've heard no more.

Steinar is far too far down the plan now Colin. His dates were clear. Shame. Maybe I'll get there before I reach 70?

I am sorry to hear that.
But on the positive side, there's no opening hours for Norway so you can visit us any time it suits you. ;)

That road is for Learners !! In South Island, New Zealand, north of Queenstown, there is a similar road 22
Kms long called Skippers Canyon. It was hewn out of the rock by the Gold Diggers but they did not have concrete and Tubular railings hence it is a long drop.
The road appears to join the Highway at the North end but look again. There is a small gap which turned out to be a rock face so turnaround and drive back. There are no Petrol Stations however the local Farmer will give you some Petrol and a beer. Oh, and if you wish you can have a Bungi Jump on the way.
