Just back from Germany

Post by James Curgenven » Tue Apr 21, 2009 9:49 am

And I have to say... what a lovely country you have!

I shall be going back again soon :)

Although it would be nice if you Belgians could spend some money on repairing your motorways please ;)

Ah, the German Autobahns, built with a continuos line of concrete platforms, each with a different amount of subsidence giving a step between each and every one. I found the worst south of Freiburg in the late 60s and it was the same in the late 90s until being rebuilt in about 2000. Real boneshaker driving.
The best motorways are in Uk except for one problem. In Germany, drivers keep to the RH lane and in UK, they keep to the RH lane, possibly the centre but never to the LH where they should be. We do not need extra lanes and traffic jams in UK, just more cars with little blue lights on top doing their job like they do in Germany.
Germany and the rest of Europe have many great places to visit in good traditional MG Country, but not perhaps in Re-badged Rovers, but then I may be a traditionalist.

Come on Geoff, this old type of Autobahns are rare. We still have some of them, but not that much. Of course that doesn't mean the "new" ones are much better... :?
In fact we have some real nice ones, and a good part of them without speed limits 8-)

And of courese we also have this idiots driving on the center lane, or even left lane, when the should use the right one. But i guess thats an international problem.

@James: Where did you stay?

I read the register regulary, but you're right, i'm not writing that much. But when there's a discussion about our Autobahns (or Autobahnen, as the germany plural is called) i just have to post :D

Really looking forward to the Kempenrit!

I have said it before but I will say it again!

The best thing about the German Autobahn is that people use them WHICH means the minor roads are left in an almost traffic free state -- GREAT for MG enthusiasts who like to enjoy the scenery as well as the fine country roads of Germany. As someone said after the first Treffen that I set up and planned 'Germany is the worlds best kept touring secret' ! :thumbsu:

We drove in Southern Germany and in Austria last year and could not help but notice the excellence of the roads, including the autobahns. They were billiard-smooth, well-engineered with good sight-lines and always well signed with the signs clean and kept clear of overhanging vegetation. I appreciate that it may be that we were just lucky, but those roads were a joy to drive.

It seems as soon as you cross the channel, driving becomes a pleasure again!

Naturally whenever in Cornwall / Devon / Somerset it still is a pleasure, but most of the UK network is far from pleasurable! (I cover 40k to 60k a year!)

The autobahns aren't so much fun driving a 35 year old BGT at 60mph when you come up behind a slow lorry ~ you either have to sit behind it or pull over into a gap between two cars doing 80mph+ hoping that the one behind will pull over into the outside lane!

I dunno, you lot in your butchered Metros seem to enjoy it, so a Re-badged Rover with a BMW power plant should be right at home

We stayed in Essen for a friend's wedding, lovely City :thumbsu:
