Hi guys,
Brought a 99 T plate MGF in silver over the weekend for £140, promising my fiancée I wouldn't spend anything on it until after we get married next year. However it was purchased as a non-runner so naturally I was allowed a few quid to get it back home...
Bought a towing bar in an attempt to tow it home but after realising just how hard it is to tow an MGF, had to give up after 3 miles as the lashing eyes on both sides snapped. Luckily I was close to a family members house and it's now on their driveway. I'm no mechanic but I'm good a bodging things. Most jobs I start go wrong and take/cost twice as long/much but here goes!
After being told it was a VVC, finding a distributer cap under the engine cover was a surprise, and after some online checks, I now have an MPi with a VVC plate under the front bonnet. Getting slightly worried...
Sunday I changed battery, HT leads and dizzy cap but it wouldn't start. I've just purchased a rotor arm, spark plugs and a coil pack in an attempt to aid starting. As it's quite far from my house it's difficult to get over to it in the daylight, as fixing it is currently all I think (and dream) about! Naturally all today I've been searching forums gathering vital info and tips for fault finding.
When I get back there I will check for a spark and if the fuel pump is functioning, and start adding new parts.
It's done 74k, I've checked online for its MOT history and all looks legit. It's comes with one key and working fob and that's it. No history either.
But for £140 and engine parts as cheap as what they are, who can complain? (apart from my fiancée)

Hi and welcome to the forum
Keep us up dated on your progress.
I hope, that if you've had a 1.8i fitted they have changed the ECU as well. One way to tell if it is a VVC is a small belt cover at the gearbox end of the engine.

Hi there, welcome to the forum from your local region.
Pop along to our next pub meet this Wednesday, details are on the Essex pages below.
A quick check may also suggest mpi or vvc, does the Rev counter red line at 6750 mpi or 7250 vvc ?
See you both on Wednesday ?
Adrian

6750rpm, cloth seats and dizzy. Not too sad though, I've never driven a VVC so wouldn't know what it's like after 5k rpm anyway
I'd love to tow my stricken MGF along Wednesday, have you guys sort her out. I know where it is, and will come along one week (all spare evenings are either wedding planning or now MGF tinkering)

One of our regional members has his own specialist MG garage here in Southend. Give Steve a call if you're stuck. British Legends 01702 511123 is the number.MckRob85 wrote:6750rpm, cloth seats and dizzy. Not too sad though, I've never driven a VVC so wouldn't know what it's like after 5k rpm anyway

If you can't make the evening pub meets, bring your fiancé of course, how about our Christmas evening dinner on December 10 at The Lodge ?

Ok, let me mull that over, she organises pretty much everything so if we are free that evening I can pencil us in!
Been reading through a lot of the technical posts on non-starting cars and it's so annoying to read a whole heap of suggestions and then the person never updates with what worked or didn't. They just disappear. Frustrating.
