I will own one soon!!

Post by Buzzy-Beans » Sat Dec 16, 2017 5:19 pm

Hello one and all;

I have been lurking around various forums for some time trying to decide which modern classic we were going to buy for our slightly ancient bones to use on sunny top down days.

My list of potential drop top modern classics also included the MG B GT fitted with Webasto roof, but SWMBO knocked that thought very firmly on the head, she also wasn't at all interested in any thoughts of me buying a RWA Midget, despite the fact that I had owned one from new way back in the 70's, so instead the list finally came down to the Alfa Romeo Spider (I don't like FWD), BMW Z3 (too big and too expensive to maintain), Toyota MR2 Mk1 (rust), Mazda MX5 Mk1 (personally I still love them but SWMBO doesn't) and finally the MGF in its original form.

We haven't bought one yet but living where we do, we are very fortunate to have a mark specialists quite literally just down the road, so just as soon as I have finished knocking around and generally rebuilding our cottage and finally getting down to clearing out the garage workshop we will be popping off down the A1 to pick up a gem.

All the best

Hi and welcome to the forum

I assume that you are talking about Trophy Cars at Peterborough, they have a reasonable reputation but as they are a dealer you will pay a premium. In other words you can spend the same money and get more car.

It is also worth trying a few as the MGF doesn't feel the same as a "normal" car due its fluid suspension.
And the rear engine alters the weight distribution.

Some versions of the Alfa have four wheel drive.

Thanks for your welcome and advice James.

With regards to Trophy Cars I feel I must pass comment.
According to my internet research they do appear to have an exceptionally good reputation and this was most certainly boosted by our lengthy visit there.
They are located in Peterborough but 25 miles North close to the village of Colsterworth.
As for their prices, personally I believe their stock of cars are very well priced, most especially as all cars sold by them come with: -
A new triple layer headgasket, new water pump, new cambelt, freshly serviced, 1 year warranty, 1 year RAC breakdown cover and numerous other significant advantages over buying one from any private seller or indeed most commercial outlets. The final and most pertinent bonus for us is that their premises are less than 4 miles from my home..................

As for the Alfa Romeo Spider, I have driven quite a few of them and apart from their beautiful engine noises, I dislike the design and positively hate the scuttle shake of the drop top versions and as for the 4 x 4 versions, that is only available on the expensive V6 fuel sucking version which in any case still suffers from scuttle shake.

All the best

Phil

If you haven't done so already this is worth reading. Don't dismiss the TF, especially if you have the chance to compare both models on back to back roadtests at a dealer. The last of the TF's, model year 2005 have the so called comfort suspension which is improved in ride and handling, and is much like the 'F in this respect.

Also consider if you might look to improve performance with a remap (available on both the VVC and MPI) then a car running a MEMS 3 ECU is best, so a late MGF or MGTF is what you should be looking at. http://mgfcar.de/mems1.9/index.htm

One car you don't mention in your list and if not out of your price range that Is worthy of consideration is the Honda S2000, as with MGB's asking prices seem always to be on the up, unlike F/TF's sadly.
