Hello from accidental MGF Owners!

My wife just passed her theory test... as promised I went diligently hunting for her first car. High mileage Yarises and that sort of thing.

Then I got utterly bored of soulless superminis, and bought a '96 1.8i sight unseen on ebay for £410.

Having now collected it, my instinct (without knowing what I'm talking about) is that it's fundamentally ok, but highly sheddy. I have covered about 100 miles in it since Sunday without anything significant happening, other than I think it's riding a bit low and the noise over speed bumps sounds like worn bushes. Will be getting it looked at by a local specialist (Rover Centre in St Albans) next week for a proper opinion.

In the meantime, we're going to be spending the Easter long weekend doing driving practice!

First of these practice sessions was a short one today. Petrifying.

Hello and welcome to MGF ownership. I'm intrigued by your description of the driving experience as 'petrifying ', I can only presume that your wife was doing a test drive, as most experienced drivers would describe it as stimulating.

Exactly. It was her first time in a petrol car (seems like driving school cars are mostly diesel now, presumably because idle away makes them hard to stall) and my first time supervising a learner!

Instead of buying the car equivalent of a washing machine (it just needs to do the job) we need to listen to that little voice that says "I know this is not the sensible thing to do, but I don't care, I want the nice shiny toy"

You might regret it, but at least it won't be boring

Interesting, when I was taught to drive, in the '50s, we were taught clutch control by learning to pull away on tick-over. No diesel cars in those days though.

If you think the suspension is low it might be the hydragas spheres need re-charging. Congrats on your purchase.
