Mgf braking problem

Post by Strat61 » Sun Jul 19, 2020 8:01 am

Morning men, oh and ladies. Just bought a very nice 2001 TF, but I have to use excessive pressure on the brake pedal to to slow down or stop. It passed its mot last week with no advisories, but Im sure this isn’t right. A servo problem maybe? All help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Larry

All MGFs and TFs suffer from bulkhead flex under braking. This can be off-set by fitting a brace to the Servo. This subject has been covered on the Forum before, so if you do a forum search, the magnifying glass symbol to the right at the top of the title page, you should get the information you need.

What about old brake fluid. Every garage can check this in a minute.

Hi and welcome to the forum Larry

My daughters Rover 100 stood for 6 months when she was in Australia a few years ago.
When she got back her brakes were appalling.
The garage diagnosed old brake fluid and flushed it through with new.
It took them 2 goes to get it clean but the brakes were brilliant afterwards.

If I change major components on the braking system I often do a rough bleed so they work and then take the car, gently, to my garage so they can do a fluid change and it gives them the grief of bleeding the system. most places charge between £35 and £40.

VW recommend a brake fluid change every 2 years as part of the annual servicing.
