New Owner of 1999 MGF, have we done the right thing?

Post by Gary Smith » Sun Aug 09, 2020 4:49 pm

Hi, Just bought ( or rather my wife has) a 1999 MGF, with a genuinel 34k on the clock, c/w hard top and all paper dating back to original purchase in 1999. Glad to join the forum and hope I will learn something about what may become a collectable classic.

Hello Gary, and welcome to the Forum.
Don't worry about your purchase being a wise buy, it will certainly become a classic in due course. Enjoy your unique acquisition, such low mileage is certainly a rarity at the age of your car. One thing you may need to be aware of is the head gasket situation. The originals usually fail at some time and replacing it is fairly expensive, unless you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the advice Barrie, the head gasket has been replaced as have the under body water coolant pipes with stainless steel ones.

The mobile MG/Rover mechanics will charge in the region of £350 for a replacement head gasket. Stash this in a savings account in case it happens.

Head gasket and water pump were replaced at 32k by an MG specialist garage, so hopefully we're safe, also the coolant pipes have been upgraded to s/steel.
They'll always be a few niggles I suspect, .. it goes with the territory.
