The Belgian WW1 weekend
Here's a few selected pictures from this fabulous event :
Saturday night in Nieuwpoort
The trenches and the Isjer Front Line, these are the last remaining preserved trenches of the 400 + km's created, it really was that close, the other side was on the other side of the river.
Walking the length of the trenches, there are about 400m's preserved we saw this, the only one
Two Essex TF's at Essex Farm Cemetry (it was here the famous poem "In Flanders Fields" was written by a Canadian doctor).
The well known Isjer Tower overlooking the octagonal PAX memorial , the Isjer River, which was the frontline and the road, which is the N355 which formed the start of the Kempenrit DayBeFore for six years.
Two MG's at the far side of Tynecot cemetery, over 11,000 soldiers are buried here
Military precision at Tynecot
Pearl driving through the Menin Gate
The ATC cadets lining up just before the "Last Post"
The buglers (volunteers from the local fire brigade actually) and the ATC at the end of the ceremony
The execution post in Popperinge, just behind is the prison cell where the convicted would spend the night before being shot at Dawn
Perfect order, even after nearly 100 years
The Peace Pool, a crater 75m x 12m, it was an underground explosive store deliberately set off to flood the area above

Re: The Belgian WW1 weekend
Great pics Adrian! Here are a few more...
A view further to the left from the Isjer Tower and the Isjer River A view out of the Isjer front line trenches towards the Belgian held territory The Cloth Hall, Ypres which houses the excellent In Flanders Fields Museum on the second floor. We spent 5 hours inside! To think this building was virtually destroyed by artillery fire during the First World War...
