How to drive in the wet

Post by adrianclifford » Wed Sep 09, 2015 3:46 pm

On Mykel's 2015 Neiderrhein Tour we had four hours of fun on a skid pan. F's badly oversteered while TF's liked going the other way, what a great experience. It's hard to show a car travelling at speed when all four wheels are locked but I tried. We had to brake hard in the wet on both smooth and rough surfaces and one exercise was to drive between cones with one surface on either side, we found out how intelligent the abs was but still took out some cones  . The first run was at 30mph, the second at 40 and the third was as fast as we dared. The long run off at speed round the end of the track saw the most action. Emma had the longest skid of the day (no abs), Captain Chaos (Herbie) the biggest off, Chrisso managed to lift a back wheel and everybody had fun with no damage other than cones and grass :thumbsu:

Thank you Adrian for these reminders of a Fantastic weekend. Driving on the wet track was not only great Fun it were hours very well spend. Although It looked we were just slippin' and slidin' I learned a lot about the response of my MGTF in various driving conditions.

Brilliant photos Adrian, they really capture the event well :thumbsu: Even better that they're all 'au naturel', there are a lot of photos so obviously over edited at times that it makes a refreshing change to see them as they came off the camera. What camera do you use? My trusty Canon has been letting me down a bit recently so I'm window shopping for a new one at the moment.

I arranged a skid pan day (not own cars unfortunately) at Castle Combe several years back... but believe it or not, it got rained off on the day! Too much rain washed away the stuff they put on the surface to make it slippery apparently

Hi Jan I've used Nikon's for over 30 years. I've only got a 5100 and a D40X but used correctly they are good and reliable. The advantage of the 5100 is the tilt screen but in a way it's a disadvantage because you have to have it open and sticking out the side to see the screen and it does get in the way.

I choose the AWB carefully and shot in aperture priority but for these shots I took the asa to 400 and varied the speed to get the action. I could not get wheel blur as on the sliding shots the wheels were not turning anyway but by shooting at 125th of a second I got the background blurred and later when they were dashing round the half circle I caught the wheels rotating.
