Car Tax cannot be sold on when a car is sold!

Post by cath's mg » Thu Aug 28, 2014 9:21 pm

Just read this on the 75/ZT and it came as a surprise to me :?

Most of us know that the 'Tax Disc', first introduced in 1921, is disappearing from the 1st October, but what I, and apparently most motorists don't realise is that from then on, you can't sell a car as 'Taxed', with the new owner enjoying the amount of 'tax' left unused. The legal requirement now means that the seller will advise the DVLA of the sale and they will automatically refund the outstanding unused amount. The new owner is liable for the 'taxation' from day one of their new ownership and presumably will have to tax the car before it is collected.

Roadside enforcement will now be done by NPR systems and enforced by the Police. Anybody flouting the rules is liable to a fine of up to £1,000!

I’d read about this as well, Gary. The new “improved” situation makes it almost impossible to export a vehicle on its own wheels from the UK, something I’ve done quite a few times now. As of old, it was sufficient to take over the car with the complete V5 and plates, provided it was MoT’t and taxed, I could then get a cross border insurance from the ADAC (german AA) to drive the car for 4 weeks all over Europe.

With the new rules I’d now have to tax the car in the UK, which I can’t, as I’m not a UK resident. Also I’d have to have a UK insurance for this, which I can’t apply for for the same reason. There are short term plates I can get in Germany which are covered EU wide insurance-wise, but the reg office here won’t let me have them if the car is not located in Germany. So it will be trailer only, adding massively to the cost of transport, which effectively makes buying an MG in the UK senseless.

Common market, yeah! :thumbsd:

But unless the post office is open you can't get a tax disc without a V5 in your name. Have they changed this process also?

How about if the seller drove the car to France?

Or I guess you could get the seller not to tell the DVLA for a few days :?

Don't the computer age make things easier

According to some of the posts on the 75/ZT forum, you will be able to tax the vehicle online 24/7 or use a 24 hour hotline :?

and neither of those method ever go wrong do they

There was mention of paying via DD, obviously with a 5% premium. Natch!

As far as I have understood, DD payment will be taken in monthly instalments, that's why the premium applies. Here in Germany we have to give the taxpeople the power to debit our bank accounts, and they always take the full amount for a whole year. Earlier we would have received a tax slip once a year and then pay via bank transfer, but obviously there were many people who didn't pay, so now we have to hand in the DD paper when registering the car.
