I DONT BELIEVE IT !!!!! .....the final chapter

Post by cath's mg » Thu Apr 16, 2015 3:32 pm

The hard top hasn't been off a week yet, driving up the A10 and SMAH the rear screen glass in the Soft Top shattered

The best part is as the glass is bonded to the hood and not zipped in, it isn't covered on the glass policy of the Insurance. As the glass can not be replaced, it needs a whole new hood.

I know this doesn't sound as it is meant, but I am so glad Cath was driving and not me (not that that would make the slightest difference).

Not good. Was Cath driving at the time or parked? Was she OK? Maybe best that Cath was driving - you might have panicked.

Hi John, Cath was driving up the A10 at the time, still cant work out how it happened, I have never seen a rear screen go before.

Cath is fine, she was a little shaken up but pulled over in a layby to take a few deep breaths. Then carried on to her daughters in Welwyn.

If I was driving the electric blow pipe would have been a history and I would have been straight in the Fag shop. Cath is made of sterner stuff :thumbsu:

Hi Ya Stuart, how you keeping?

It could have been a lot worse mate, luckily Cath doesn't drive fast, kept calm and managed to pull over into a layby without any problems.
She was a bit shaken up, but ok now.
I think after your stories about fitting a new soft top cover we are going to let the professionals do it when the insurance company get there finger out

Hi Malcolm, yep I have never heard of it happening before, but a guy over on FB had it happen to him 5 years ago on the M25.

The main thing is Cath is OK and it can be repaired :D

Hope Cathy is ok and you can get it fixed.

Was the roof up or down?

If it was up I guess a stone could have been thrown up at speed by a vehicle going the other way.

Might be worth speaking to MGFmania to see if the one panel can be replaced.

Thanks, Cath is fine now (she's a tough old bird :o ). The roof was up when it happened, your idea of a stone being thrown up from a vehicle traveling the opposite way makes perfect sense, we were both at a loss to understand how it could have happened until your idea :D
I don't think it can be repaired as the section the glass is fitted into runs the length of the hood :( .

Ouch, Gary, that looks nasty. Good that Cath is such a tough girl, I’d probably need a good clean on the driver’s seat after such an incident.

The hood looks to be the BAS speedster type, now the question will be, does your insurance company know about this mod? Back in the nineties, I had a Suzuki Swift convertible with a single piece hood and the rear screen broke. The insurance had to pay the complete hood replacement and take that down as glass damage (not affecting the NCB!) as the panel could not be replaced separately, 1,200 Deutschmarks at that time, which would have been 400-ish pounds then.

Now if your insurers have agreed to cover the speedster hood, they must know that a glass damage on the rear window will inevitably lead to a full hood replacement. if they haven’t, you could still try to get at least the money for replacing a standard screen as was series.

Hi Mykel, I don't think I would have handled the situation as calmly as Cath either  , I think its in a woman's DNA not to panic

The hood is a BAS speedster and no we didn't specify it on the insurance, so its not covered by the Glass cover

Luckily Cath has protected NCB so its not so bad but still has to pay the first £200. BAS want over £800 plus to supply and fit a replacement cover and that would mean a trip to Wales. Brown & Gammons are doing an offer for a hood with Glass screen for £250 + fitting (about £200). If the insurance company get akward then I think we will just get the cover from B & G and I'll fit it myself

Bloody hell! Gladf Cath is ok, car bits can be bought and replaced. Cath bits can't.

I reckon the stone thing is most likely right, bugger.

Likewise, shout for a hand.

Well Cath spoke with the Insurance company today and to say she is not a happy bunny is very understated. she had more steam coming out of her ears than a steam engine

The upshot is that the Insurance company want to write the car off, let her keep it, then give her the money to get the roof replaced :o

They said that because of the "AGE" of the car it was standard procedure to write it off. My reply using that criteria, a 45 year old E-type Jag worth 30K with £600 pounds worth of damage would be written off. The very nice lady at the other end of the phone seemed somewhat stumped

So Cath has told the insurance company that she officially does not want to proceed with the claim. We will get a cover from B & G with a glass screen for £250 and fit it ourselves :o

Needless to say come August Cath will be changing insurers :)
