Advice needed
Buying a MGF, have found one but I'm concerned about the following things:
Coolant in the expansion tank just looks like water, plenty of pressure though and no mayo on oil from dipstick. However, there does appear to be a little water leak under the engine at the cambelt side of the engine. Also, gear change between second and first is quite heavy and not as free flowing.
What would you say? Walk away?

With so many F/TF's on sale I would walk away if you have any concerns at all unless ........ the price is right and takes into account what sound like a minimum of a water pump change. It is disturbing to hear though that the coolent looks like water, especially with the cold weather we have had recently, so even more reason to look for another one.
Keep on looking unless you want a project car to play with.

Re: Advice needed
He wants £1260 for the car, which to be honest if it were my project car I wouldn't be too worried about, but the car would be the girlfriends daily run around. The car has done coming up to 70K on the clock, and has a pretty good MOT and TAX on it. Front two tyres are needed, and apart from my concerns with the gear linkage, leak and water in the expansion tank, it's a clean car.
I dunno, I just personally think the K Series is very picky about what coolant you run it on, and I'm not happy with water being used only. But, would you say 1260 is a bargain price?
On top of this, typically what can you expect to pay for a water pump change on a MGF?

Re: Advice needed
water pump isn't a lot of money from memory.
If you are in any doubts, walk away from it.
There's plenty about!

Re: Advice needed
I brought a new water pump for my ZT turbo last month £30, so thats cheep
but then the is no coolent in the car so bleeding it all, which is always fun on a F.. If you get a garage to do the job along with fitting pump thats a few hours work, then it needs front tyres. And the gear box issue. I would keep looking , there is plenty out there.

I know of a very good 1999 silver MGF for sale that has been loved to death. It's got a very good leather interior and I think it will keep it's MGF number plate to if you're interested. It's one of our long term members so many of us know this car.
