New replecement panels
Seasons greetings fellow enthusiasts
I know this subject was raised some time ago but I cant find an ans anywhere.
Is it possible to get new replacement body panels ? I want to keep my 1995 MGF -I LOVE it :-)and want to keep it in pristine condition. I would like new sills and rear wings. there are areas of rust on the originals which can be treated and repaired but I would be prepared to invest in new replacements --yes I love my " Topless " that much ok maybe Im just sad but I dont care
as usual- your advice and comments are very welcome
Thank you

Thank you Nigel for taking the time to reply youre a gentleman . I have already sent an enquiry to Rimmer bros so hopefully I will hear something soon. I see from the number of readers of the thread there might well be lots of others similarly interested.
Once again -Thank you

Re: New replecement panels
I recall reading that British Motor Heritage may have bought up MGF/TF body tooling - something that I really ought to get around to confirming. But if so, this is nothing but good news for us! Is the MGF the new MGB?

Re: New replecement panels
Greetings again---
Firstly thank you for taking the time to reply:-) the good news is that through the " British Motor Heritage "web site I have found a branch near Belfast who have in stock 2 wings and one sill and are trying to source me another sill. I hope to go see them in person this week and see what happens. Hopefully by the time I hand "Topless" over to my son ( sometime way in the future hopefully ) it will be in mint condition
Will keep you updated
Thanks again

Re: New replecement panels
Thanks for the info chaps - Andy's currently looking into getting a new rear wing (right hand side I think) for SF. We were going to start looking in scrapyards, as didn't realise that Rimmers etc. produced new ones so very exciting.

Re: New replecement panels
Oh ohoooo Hold that result !!
The parts I have found are old stock and a right hand sill cannot be found for love nor money BUT !! what is even more confusing is that I contacted a local MG dealer who checked with their supplier who claims to have both right and left rear wings AND sills combined !! I did put him over this and he is adamant that these ARE for a 1995 F, has anyone else found ONE piece rear wing and sill combined ?
I intend calling him again tomorrow to put him over it all once more. Could these parts be for a TF ? does anyone know ?If they are would they fit an F ? your comments are as always very welcome .
I will keep you posted--but it isnt looking hopeful at the moment BUT an interim apology for raising hopes

Re: New replecement panels
Sounds like TF parts.
Need to contact BMH to see whether or not they have the old body presses. If they don't, who do?

Re: New replecement panels
Just dropped BMH a call. Only thing they do for the MGF at present is the hard top (OEM style). Currently no suggestion of production body panels for MGF. Not clear as to whether or not they own the original tooling, but have chatted to one of the managers, and he's going to chat to the MD... which may mean that if I get an answer, it may be one that I will not be able to repeat on a forum due to commercial considerations.
We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Re: New replecement panels
85 quid each, plus 12 quid delivery if you can't pop round to them to collect. I wonder how much they weigh? The standard steel ones don't weigh that much... but a sensible development IMO.
Not heard back from BMH yet regarding steel panels...

But may produce paint matching problems.Rob Bell wrote:85 quid each, plus 12 quid delivery if you can't pop round to them to collect. I wonder how much they weigh? The standard steel ones don't weigh that much... but a sensible development IMO.
According to my 'paint man' the paint finish and colour is different on steel panels as opposed to plastic surfaces.
This is due to the difference in electrostatic properties. The arrangement of the paint at molecular level varies in alignment, the effect of which is that the colour depth and finish appears different when identical paint is applied.

Re: New replecement panels
That'd be annoying on a road car! Would not bother me on the project Shed track special, but then I've already replaced both wings with good steel originals for considerably less than a single GRP wing...
Hmm, carbon fibre front wing, now that'd be interesting (and rather too expensive, never mind!)

Re: New replecement panels
Yes it is - he has customers with expensive new Mercs and Audis who complain about this problem.Rob Bell wrote:That'd be annoying on a road car!
It is particularly apparent with moulded white painted plastic bumpers. The white appears grey compared to steel anels adjoining that have been painted at the same time.
The F and TF of course have moulded bumpers too - and there are subtle colour differences to be seen. My Le Mans green car doesn't show this strongly, but it's there ...

Re: New replecement panels
I have also found the fibreglass front wings somewhere on the web. Apart from the colour issues I wonder what will happen to them in case of an accident. Might just break into sharp, sword-like bits and pieces, don't they?
Cheers,
Mykel

Re: New replecement panels
GRP absorbs energy better than steel. The panels tend to tear, but not shatter. They're not a bad choice for automotive use

Re: New replecement panels
Still awaiting to hear back from BMH - time to start chasing I think.
I've also contacted Rimmers. Practically all MGF specific outer panels are out of stock. I'll be contacting X-Part directly next to find out what they are planning to do about sourcing replacement panels (if indeed they plan to do anything).
As it happens, I was up at Tech-speed, getting my MGF serviced. Marvin mentioned that Malcolm Gammons has a significant supply of rear wings - and perhaps a number of other panels, Expect original Rover prices from B&G though - but at least there are supplies available from somewhere. I may drop B&G a line to see what the stock situation is.

Re: New replecement panels
If that worked this is our MGB in the 70s when it was Mazda Astro Purple (sprayed at low pressure and high viscosity to give a deeper colour than OE). The wings are fibreglass and looked great. I was always getting offers to buy the car. I now regret going back to OE, these were lighter and corrosion proof. Radio reception was fine, I bonded in some expanded aluminium to give an earth plane. I was amazed how well this turned out.
