Will I ever learn

Post by cath's mg » Sun Feb 10, 2013 9:57 am

Had to do a bit of community service yesterday :o

Once again my passion for Breakers yards has got me into trouble.

I came home Friday with a very good condition Aluminium Radiator for Cath’s 1996 MGF :D

All was going well, managed to sneak it into the shed without her seeing it. :thumbsu: Then yesterday I heard her dulcet tones uttering “what the hell is this for” (I knew then that I should have hidden the key for the bloody shed) . I tried to explain that this was a very good Alley Rad and it would be a straight swop for her 1996 Rad (it made perfect sense to me).

Cath then quite logically (you know the way that woman have the tendency to do  ) pointed out that since we had flushed the cooling system out and refilled with new anti-freeze in October, we have had to put about an egg cup full of coolant mixture into the car, it has never shown any signs of overheating (then came the killer questions), have you checked to if the Radiator is showing signs of failing or indeed has it already been fitted with an Aluminium Radiator.

Of course this was the chance to get myself out of trouble, I knew what I wanted to say (yes my love  ), but of course under her relentless gaze I wilted and muttered “no sweetness”. God bless her she just smiled sweetly and handed me the bucket.

If you have read any of Gary's previous posts (collecting two of everything) you know its only a matter of time before he comes home with another one

I resolved that problem - Mrs TC bought herself a ZR and then I told her the MGF is hers when I got it, well she does drive it more than my ZS and T16 maestro.

And she knows there is a garage, just no idea what's in there.

My garage is already jam packed with MG bits. And I am planning to get more. It's a safer hobby than drink and smoking I reckon - and gets through the household steering committee on that basis ;)

If I could find an affordable industrial unit, I'd rent it at a snap! Some how I just know that a single lock up will be woefully inadequate for my storage needs!

I go halves on an industrial unit with a mate that has secure parking or I'd never have the space for 'the fleet' as the misses calls it. We split the rent down the middle and have sheeted it into two halves. Im welding my midget in a rotisserie at the moment in my half with all the bits needed to finish and he does up VW's in his half. it's a win win. If you know some one local you trust, it's an idea.

That's exactly what I'd like to do :thumbsu: - but finding a suitable unit, and finding someone else to go halves on it are the tricky bits :(

Yup I was lucky. I'd worked with the bloke for 10 years and I trust him completely. We both have a lot of expensive gear in there and we both know where each other lives. Lol...... Wouldn't lend him my car keys mind, I've seen the way he drives..

I have a friend who races vintage MGs. His kids had moved away from home and he and his wife were rattling around their big house so they sold it.
They bought a trendy condo for her with no garage or greasy car parts in sight. He bought an industrial unit, installed a hoist, milling machine, welding gear etc, etc. I would like to say I have a place to work on my car but he has it so full of cool old cars and parts that you can barely walk inside, never mind get a car other than one of his in!
Needless to say they are both very happy!
