Re: so what did everyone else drive before their mgf/tf?
Lada 1200S - old Y Reg (passed my test in this in 1985)
Vauxhall Nova 1.2 limited edition (only 18 made) - old E reg bought brand new in 1986 and had her for 9 years (was my pride and joy)
Renault Clio
Vauxhall Astra 1.6 - R reg
Vauxhall Astra 1.8 SRi - 51 plate I think???
Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Comfort - 51 plate again I think???
Toyota Avensis Estate 2.0 Auto - X reg
MG ZT 260 SE+ (owned between 2007-9)
MG TF 160 (2010-current)
The worrying part is that I remember the registration numbers of the cars I owned 28 years ago and 26 years ago, but not the more recent ones. Hope this isn't a sign of dementia???????

Re: so what did everyone else drive before their mgf/tf?
Having passed my test decades ago I have had to many cars to list, but here are a few
Morris 1/2 ton pickup first car cost £60
Morris 1100, floor detached from sills in a Rochdale car park
Sunbeam Stiletto, series of head gasket problems (not a K series engine!!) and a propensity to behave like a crab at the first hint of snow.
Various Montegos, sold before they also rusted
Subaru Impreza Justy and Legacy
Fiat Tipo turbo diesel, fantastic car written off by a Stagecoach bus
Various Fiat Pandas Puntos and Multiplas
Citroen C4 Picasso
Should I also mention I was a PSV licence holder and drove AEC, Leyland, Bedford, Volvo, Scania, Albion, Setra, Ford etc.
And a fleet of taxis, Ford mk1 and mk2 Granadas
Transit, Bedford CF and Dodge minibuses
Could go on!

The MGFs replaced a 1975 TR7 FHC and my 1955 Supercharged MG-ZA Magnette.
It was a good move.

I wouldn't be embarresed by that, I passed my test in 1981 in our R reg Lada 1200, dad had the car from new and gave it to me when it was 5 years old, we eventually scrapped it at 11 years and 100k.Shot Silk TF wrote:Lada 1200S - old Y Reg (passed my test in this in 1985)

Re: so what did everyone else drive before their mgf/tf?
Passed test in 1971, 1st car 1963 Ford Anglia Super, then over years and not in chronological order,
Ford's = Cortina MK1,Mk2 & Mk4- GT's, Estate & 1600E, Escort Mk1, Mk2 - supers, RS Mexico & estate, Granada Mk3, Sierra's - Estate, GT and Cosworth 3-door & Mondeo Estates x 2.
Vauxhalls = Viva HB & HC, and Calibra
Hillman = Avenger
British Leyland = Rover SDI 2.6, Metro's 1.3S and Vanden Plas
Land Rover = Series 3 truck cab with canvas back
MG = Midget, B GT, Metro x 2, ZS (current) and F (current)
Volkswagen = 07 Passat TDi Estate (current)
All of those have been owned for more than a year, there is some cheap dodgy dross that came and went on top of those above - best forgotten really

Re: so what did everyone else drive before their mgf/tf?
OK, I'll have a go, not a particularly interesting list but here we go:-
Opel Kadett Fastback 1.3S; This car was my first, it was awesome, broke down, went rusty, always needed something doing when it was raining/freezing but I loved it!
Vauxhall Astra MkI 1.2; Had this when I got a job with Stockport council, it was the same orangy-red colour as the council's logo, I never lived that down!
Vauxhall Astra MkII 1.3; The 'jelly-mould' one in rather nice light metallic blue, chaved it to bits, big wheels, daft exhaust and ridiculously loud ICE for my 'tunes'!
Vauxhall Belmont SRI 1.8 GWE; Cracking car, went like stink, GWE stood for 'Greasy Weasel Edition' . Big red fuel injected booted Astra, I made a balls of it with a chavvy lowering kit ! (the lads at work rearranged the badge on the back to read something else that started with 'Bel...') !
Vauxhall Calibre Turbo; This was fast, very fast after some 'mods', couldn't hold a corner for toffee but if torque-steer is your bag this motor ticks the box quite effectively !
Fiat Bravo 1.8 HSE; This car was total pants, idiot clown pants that you woudn't even wear while decorating, should never have strayed from the Vauxhalls !
Rover 820; Can't remember the spec but do remember the nice 'armpit' smell that the interior gave off, great after a day parked in the sun.
Seat Cordoba or VW Polo; Dull and boring but it filled a gap until it farted out its gearbox one day.
Peugeot 307 2.0D; This turned out to be surprisingly good, and that's it !
Vauxhall Astra MK5 1.6Sport; Nah, I'd gone off Vauxhalls after this one, outside looked good but it felt like I was driving round in a Tupperwear box.
Peugeot 307cc; My first taste at convertable driving, on the odd occasion the roof worked I looked a proper tool driving it!
Jaguar X Type Est 2.0D; This was a cracking motor for lugging heavy stuff along the motorway all day, sold it with 155k on the clock, still ran sweet as a Transit!
Jaguar Xtype 3.0V6; I've still got this, it makes my pants fizzy so I kept it !!
MGF Steptronic; Had it for a week now, its behaved mostly although it does put on a fine light show of warning lights occasionally and the CVT gearbox needs some attension but it's proper, dirty-handed fun !!
I think thats it,
Si.
