TF135 mpg !!

Having just returned from the weekend trip to Antwerp I have worked out my mpg.

Leaving Essex, driving to Dover at 70ish--90 miles.
Dunkerque to Antwerp at 70-80 132 miles.
The road run 52 miles until we topped up at a sedate pace totalled 274 miles in 80 + deg heat too.

I put in 23.65 litres of Esso Super resulting in 51.6 mpg.

I always use first click and always run the car on super, where I can get it I use Esso Momentum 99, if not any good 97 or 98 grade.

Adrian's has been remapped, I'm not sure if specifically for a higher RON or not, but the cleaning agents in super will help keep the engine running clean, and the only thing it'll hurt at worst is your wallet

Not for the older F's but used every now and then to help clean everything through it causes no problems

Absolutely fine - no problem at all. The only thing is that it won't suddenly turn the car into a pocket rocket

Yeah I understand that Rob, its not very often I exceed 4,000rpm anyway.
The idea of giving slight cleaning attributes must be slightly beneficiary to the car's engine? I try to use Super in my 1971 250cc Lambretta because the cylinder head was machined to suit the higher compression etc.

Going back to the original topic, I really must find out what my 1.8 MPI TF can do to the gallon. I suspect not as good as the OP's results though.

48 was about the best I managed in mine...

8 is about the worst I can do now if I really push it, and 26 the best.

There's a lot to be said for the economy of the K Series

Well, err... I don't get that close to the figures that Adrian quotes: I drive everywhere with the roof down and have something of a lead foot, so the high 30s is usually deemed to be good.

I managed to get 39.6 mpg out of the TF on the way down to Le Mans it normally sits around 34 is (I too suffer from lead foot syndrome )

Hi all When I went to work 16mls there 16mls back I managed 38-39 mpg but now I am retied and only do 6 mls a day it's 30mpg or less The best I ever got was 44 on hols around Cornwall

As James says, the car is re-mapped, I asked Mark if it would benefit from a higher octane, he said yes it would, therefore I use a higher octane wherever I am. I believe he can adjust the map setting to cover a higher octane.

The trip to Antwerp and back was flat, traffic free so I would not expect to get that economy regularly but in previous trips abroad over the Alps/Pyrenees/Dolomites etc, the car has turned in over 43mpg in it's previous (factory state). The exhaust is modified too so the gasses escape much more freely and the air induction is better too but the bottom line is I now have the figures to back up my beliefs.

As for the cost, how much are we talking about, a few pence per litre for a cleaner better running engine with excellent mpg.

Just one 218 miles mostly motorway including the dreaded m25 filled up again to first click as normal and worked out at 47mpg

I was talking to Nigel (Sniper Penguin) about the benefits of remapping a 135, I did not realise that it could help with fuel consumption as well

That's what every one says. Whether it is a more efficient map, or whether because you have more torque you don't use the rev range quite so much I am not sure. It would be great to get before and after fuel consumption figures for this map over a set test route! Anyone up for the challenge?

The economyof these cars is one of the attraciive things about them. I posted about our modified 115 recently When mine was remapped Mark asked if I wanted it set for Super or Regular. I chose regular as I have had problems with the MGB turning it's nose up at Euro super. Otherwise I would have gone for the super as it will be more advanced and give more power and you will also get the extra economy out of the Super offsetting the higher price per litre.
I have read that the turbulence caused by the restrictive valves in the K series gives the good economy at the expense of max power. Has anyone got before and after numbers with a gas flowed or re-valved head?

Hi I have a vvc with a head job the valves have been worked on to make the shoulders of the valves more efficient and the ports inlet and exhaust done but not done more than 30 mls per route I will have to go on a big run some time

I have just returned from a short hop down to Corvallis in Oregon from Edmonton in Alberta
We went to MG2013 a US National meet. I took 2 1995 Mpi s and recorded just over 47mpg from both.
My son was driving the second one before you ask.
As for temperature about half the journey exceeded 100F... Uncomfortable at any speed!
Distance was around 2500 miles recorded and some spirited driving especially on the return journey

The MGF is not eligible for importation into the States until it is 25 yrs old, Canada has a 15 yr ban
The Green F in the Pic is from Newfoundland but it is stabled with Friends in California, Mine are the Red ones
The Blue MGB in the background is the oldest in the US and I believe the oldest LHD MGB in the world

I just finish putting just over 2,000 miles on my MGF on a trip from Ontario to New Brunswick, Canada. I averaged 45 mpg motoring along at about 70 mph for the most part.
