500 miles @ 46mpg

I thought I wasn't getting great mpg from my MGF so I thought I would conduct a little experiment. I filled up my F at a local petrol station, to the brim and '1 click' from the pump shut off. I then drove until I hit the red section and filled up again at the same petrol station and same pump to the brim again.

I had some 'control' rules. Don't break the speed limit, don't rev over 3k RPM. Other than that I drove pretty normally. The results we quite surprising. I managed 491.8 miles and to fill up I needed 48.58L of fuel. By my calculations 48.58l = 10.68 gallons. 491.8/10.68 = 46.04 MPG. I could easily have hit the 500 mile for the tank, but it would have meant filling up somewhere else and I wanted consistency in my test.

An average of 46 mpg?????????????? I am gobsmaked. I wasn't really trying to be super economical. I have my hardtop on, a boot full of junk, I didn't check my tyre pressures every week, and I took lots of fun A roads instread of dull but efficient motorways. I am sure that if I really tried hard I could get over 50mpg average for a tank. Anyone else get amazing MPG?

For the next tank of fuel I am going to gun it everywhere and really enjoy the car to see the worst case scenario (but still obey the speed limit).

My best so far is 40.6 mpg but I haven't worked out the figures from our euro 2013 tour yet.

Thars impressive i only get that from my 2.2tdci mondeo and diesel costs more. I have to play when in my F though so probably use a damn sight more fuel than i could do if i was more sensible but its around 400 to 425 a tank

I posted similar recently after a run to Belgium for their 35th anniversary event. After a 70mph run to Dover then a 70-80mph enthusiastic run to Antwerp and most of the road run we topped up while we had the chance and I achieved 51.6mpg. Re-mapped TF135 with a Piper 4-2-1, Daytona exhaust and a Vader cold air kit running on Tesco Momentum 99 fuel.

When in Europe, where my car spends most of it's time and mileage I always use higher octane fuel as it's re-mapped to do so. I noticed last weekend in Germany, while at the MGFIM Shell were selling V Power racing fuel at 100 octane, bit pricey at €1.80 per litre. Later on, again in Germany Aral were selling super octane fuel at 102 octane .

I agree but I have found 95Ron to be just that, the 95E10 is a seperate pump or am I wrong ?, I use a higher octane as you know so I haven't paid a great deal of attention to 95 pumps recently.

Yes, they are separate pumps but they are clearly marked. Make sure you check the info on the pumps before you fill up. Both E10 95RON and normal unleaded 95RON Sans Plomb are available in France. If you can't find 95 sans plomb use 98 sans plomb, not the E10.

We'll have to watch out for that if it happens, I'm happy with 98 or 99 octane.

I took 2 of my MGF Mpi's from Edmonton in Alberta to MG2013 at Corvallis in Oregon. A round trip of 2500 miles.
My son was driving the second car... before any wisecracks.. Every fuel fill was recorded and both achieved 47.6Mpg
We had a fairly steady drive down but a rapid return trip at 75+ most of the way home. Earlier in the year We had a trip to Radium hot springs in the Mountains of British Columbia, another 1100 miles or so when we recorded just over 46mpg for both cars... Local driving gets me high 30's so I am impressed with their economy!
The interesting thing for me is exactly the same consumption from both cars on two longer runs.

Our TF115 has recorded over 50 mpg twice. Once borders to Dunfermlin and once Folkstne to home via France and Belguim. It has a sports exhaust Piprrcross panel filter and ZandF remap. Our daughters Mk3 MR2 gives similar results. So sports cars can save the planet.

Which engine do you have?

I have the bog standard 120bhp model. Still pretty impressive. I have just completed another tankful where I bombed around like a nutter with the roof down and still hit 400 miles which still makes an average of 36mpg.

All in all it seems to be a really efficient motor.

Having just had my new Toyo's fitted I noticed on the new EU approved label they are rated F (from A as good and G as bad) in economy

How do the testers create the said figures ?, In addition they are rated F again for performance in the wet and 73 db on noise, now I'm happy they are quiet but I noticed a Continental Pro Contact on the shelf with a noise rating of 71 db, rather surprising as my eldest son took the same Conti's off his 2 litre Clio 197 early because they were so noisy
