what have you done on your mgf today?

The autolock is a feature of the Pektron unit, James, so only present on the later TFs from circa July 2003. Mine's a 2004 and she does it, but only if no door or bonnet is opened in the meantime.

Today the wiring for the loom I'm making up for the A/C arrived so what else could I do but solder them onto the tails of the respective connectors under the bonnet.

Fitted stainless horn brackets and radiator mounts.
Fitted a set of polished alloy speaker and tweeter ring thingies.

Had a couple of new Avon ZV5's fitted on the front to match the two on the rear....hoping it'll improve the straight line twitchyness. Good deal actually £117 the pair fitted by a mobile fitter.

That means I have a couple of economy 185/55/15's up for sale if anybody's interested. Both in good nick.

1 x Infinity 7 -8 mm tread

£25 the pair if anybody wants to pick them up from near Aylesbury.

Part two of the MGF 20 preps done … new front discs and pads, which was a nightmare, as the discs were stuck solid. This time I was clever and went to my local DIY store and got me a torch kit: a simple mini flame thrower in a pack with five (!) butane cartridges for 18 euros. After heating the discs for about three minutes, they gave in to modest tapping, job done. The only other thing provoked by the modest tapping was that the front air dam decided to jump ship. The mounting bracket was completely rusted and the thing just fell off. Luckily I had a spare one for a TF on the shelf.

Next was to refit the exhaust system … and the brand new, shiny heat shield of course. I drilled out the snapped bolt and cut a new thread, everything was then fitted using stainless bolts. For a reason! Then on came the new flexi pipe a used (but useable) cat with a new lambda sensor and the Toyo back box. The latter wouldn’t fit. The problem with the Toyo boxes is that they have no bolt-on hangers but fixed ones. This means, they have to have a certain tolerance to allow to fit them one side after the other. And somehow, the box would always slip over to the nearside and drop onto the rear bumper. After a while, I’d had it and took the Scorpian exhaust off the turbo project car. This was a pita in its own right, as the cat was rusted solid to it, but after some angle grinding and drilling out rusted bolts it went on Mrs P’s backside and it does fit a lot better.

I think I’ll leave the fun of the rear brakes until after our return, on Monday I am booked in at “Carglass” (euro-babble for Autoglass) for a new windscreen, so everything seems ready to go now. Uhm, apart from a good wash tomorrow.

How do you find them Scruffy? I know there is a lot of talk on the forum about tyres, specifically the Toyo's and the Falkens, but I bought the Avons as their wet rating is much better than the Toyo's.

phonecall at 4am from otherhalf saying car wont start (she took my mg to work as her jag is having injectors referbing), "its just going click click" so obviously battery flat, got it started with jump leads and was charging at 11v so obviously alternator. rang local parts places and found one for £85 new so fitted it thisaft.

Fitted the new expansion tank that I got a few weeks ago along with the replacement loalarm sensor that I'd been sent Foc by the supplier. Also replaced the drivers seatbelt with a good used one.

The only thing I can see about the Avon ZV5's is that they are not XL rated. "Blue" had a pair on the rear when I got her and it was one of those which blew out on the way home. To be fair there was a lot of uneven wear on the blown one due to the suspension unit beign collapsed driver side rear.

He probably is trying to quote a Speed Index of which there is not an X, L or combination of them. It will be a Z that he wants for 150 Plus MPH. lol

Just got that from the National Tyres website, think V is 149 mph....that should do for me, at least on the Tesco run anyway!

Prep jobs part three done, new windscreen has just been fitted. I'm now sitting at the Carglass workshop waiting for the glue to harden. Gave the F a good wash yesterday and everything’s ready to go now.

Nope as as has already been pointed out XL is the side wall strength and the MGF is supposed to use XL tyres on the rear due to the forces put intt eh side ways by the suspension set up.

First chance to take lilly out for a run. The new Avon's on the front have transformed the drive. No more twitchiness in a straight line at speed. The while car feels more positive and confident with The ZV5's all round. Amazing!
