Went and collected the ordered Klarius front pipe for teh 75th as hers had blown a hole through the flexi tube. mesh was fine but crappy almost paper thin metal of the tube blew. As it was only fitted in Jan this year have sent it back under warrenty. Of course i ahd to pay the postage. That is the second one to blow or break up in this flexi tubing bit. One on Blue alos broke up.............................. cheap crappy steel is what I am thinking. It was bought from YES car parts on ebay. The Klarius was ordered from th locla motor factors.

Well went up after 4pm collected it then we had dinner and I fitted it after dinner so the 75th is mobile once again.

The last time I got the Steppy on a lift to check the front suspension, I felt some hot drops raining down on me. Looked up and the underbody coolant pipes turned out to be so rusty, that they were dripping from three different points along the line. :o

Although I still had two sets of s/s pipes in the shed, none of these came with the extra lugs needed on a Stepspeed. Actually the standard lugs get used for the CVT oil cooler pipe and the main battery wire is re-routed to the off side. Thankfully Markus (who is an excellent s/s welder!) fixed that problem for me, so I could tackle the problem yesterday.

First thing is to put the back end on ramps, which is a bit tricky with the auto gearbox. Unfortunately, I still couldn’t get my considerably sized belly under the front end, so that was jacked up as well for improved clearance

Next thing to tackle is the floor pan which is held in place by no less than 22 bolts … probably a handy reminder to torque them up at 22 Nm when refitting them. I was very lucky to find all but one of the bolts in good nick, so no need to use any WD40 or PlusGas. Not always are they in this state:

The floor pan itself showed more than just traces of coolant, which must have dripped into it for quite some time now:

To avoid unnecessary coolant loss (and ease up the bleeding process afterwards), I closed the heater valve and used four clamps on the hoses on both sides of the pipes. Thus only about 4 litres were drained and the expansion tank kept its level during the whole operation.

The coolant was reused later and (apart from some minor spillage on the drive) came up to the same level as before. After fitting the s/s pipes, I just had to fill the expansion tank to the brim, open the rear clamps, top up again, then open the front clamps and remove the radiator bleed screw where all the air trapped in the pipes would escape. Before refilling the old coolant I used a large funnel and two layers of paper tissue as a makeshift filter:

Here’s the new pipes in place, a test-drive (10 km including Autobahn) showed no problems.

Thank you.

Fitted some lovely stainless under floor pipes today, not as bad as I thought it was going to be, I wouldn't want to do it without an air ratchet though.

Car washed, dried and finally got round to working on the paintwork. Clay bar first then got to work on any scratches that were not deep and removed them. Took a good few hours, extremely pleased with how it came up.
Second job was to start on petrol cap refurb. Removed wee bolts then cleaned it, sanded lightly and have painted with grey primer.
Tomorrow coat of wax on car before Winter and shine all the Black trim. Check fluids, bulbs and tyre pressures. Paint petrol cap.
Then go for a good run out.
I wonder why my days off go so fast.

Refitted the rear calipers, bled them, re-torqued the drive shaft nuts, fitted the exhaust, put the rear wheels on, refitted the battery and fired her up! First time in 6 months! Only downside is a noisy tappet but that is probably from not being used. She came up to temperature nicely and the tappet quietened down a bit. Try again at the weekend!
