What are you going to put in place of the tax disc?

The 'tax disc' is going to be replaced with an electronic system. So what badge of honor, or sticker if anything, are you going to replace it with?

My MGF doesn't show where my football loyalties lie, however in true football superstitious circumstances whenever I show who I support with a badge in the windscreen they go on a never ending losing streak!

You're not thinking like politicians... it's obvious we will have a combined insurance / MOT disc in it's place. I comfortably predict that this will cost a mere £25 a year to administer. We as drivers will buy it on line, failure to display will result in a fine.

The government department chosen to provide these road usage discs will of course need a super duper computer system and a 1,000 employees which will cost a lot of money. The only way to make this self funding will therefore be to raise the price of these discs to £100.

apparently the tax disc is a thing of the past and is going to become a thing of the past in the windscreen. you will still have to pay through the nose to fund our wonderful road network but it will come out of the bank every month so you wont notice the ripoff that it is. im sure we wont be better off no matter how they want to dress it up and there will only be one winner.

Car tax or vehicle excise to give it it's proper name does not fund the roads and hasn't for many many years.

Dropping the paper disc comes in from October 2014.
You will be able to pay by direct debit monthly for an extra 5%.

It does fund the roads, it goes into the exchequer and roads are funded out of the whole take. Surely it was only renamed as the take from vehicle duties was so high and the funding for he highways so low it became an embarrassing name.

But one could argue that my income tax payments fund the roads and the duty on cigarettes I buy funds the army.

The only relationship between vehicle excise duty and spending on roads is that the monies both go through the exchequer.

I think by now we all know the funds from "tax disc" doesn't pay directly to road upkeep, yes its name has been changed from road tax but is still referred to as road tax so please lets move on.
to me this is yet another sign of "progress", basically cash saving idea that will benefit only one group and it wont be the motorist, the car buyer or seller. I see only one advantage and it will be the fact i wont have to try and catch my tax disc holder when it falls off as i scoot round corners.

Actually, I think I've still got my first tax disc from 1996 in my car's history folder. I'll colour scan it and put it back in its rightful place, showing an expiry in Jan 1997.
