MGoT North Weald Today

Post by ColinP » Fri May 09, 2014 10:32 am

Well...
There is a lot more grip on the front wheels than the rear

Best to learn these things away from public roads!

Think these are all from the afternoon session when the weather was better.
Last one showing my car running in the afternoon, temps all stable.

So many beautiful cars to see too.
Including a gorgeous red MBG Hardtop, RV8 (driven very enthusiastically by its friendly owner) and this monster below belonging to Dave Pearce the organiser.

Never seen one before myself then Dave advised me only 80 were ever built!

All in all a fantastic day out and talk amongst ourselves of organising another.
Either by trying to twist MGoT for an extra date or going direct to the company based at North Weald itself.

Go on Ken, add your name to the list. And Lord Tolly for that matter!

Other than spin?.....twice!!

Morning was spent taking a sweeping L/H bend at around 60.
Sounds easy......wasn't if you wanted to push it and were a complete novice!
You could take it 50-55 with no thought whatsoever.
Trying @ 60+ you have to balance the steering and throttle in relation to the rear wheels, well I did anyway ;)
The marker was just a gully drain in the tarmac so no chance of any damage or injury at all. Just go over it and go round and try again.

Late morning we had to navigate a circuit marked with cones as pivot points, you choose your own line, just get to and stop at a final cone to record a time.

Then lunch in the cafe on-site which was cool, watching the odd jet land or essex air ambulance take off.

Into the afternoon and a second course was added in similar style to the first, just navigate the cones in as quick a time as you want and come to a stop.

You were free to try either course as you wished so it split us up nicely and meant you didn't have to wait too long for your next run.

It sounds all straight forward, and it was.
If you wanted to push then you could with no fear whatsoever of damaging anything other than scrubbing the tyres.

By the end of the afternoon, us competitive F/TF boys were all within a second or two of each other.
1.8Mpi or VVC160 I don't think it made the slightest difference, it was far more about your own ability and judgement.
The fastest chap (not by much) had an F VVC but he had done a full trackday at Brands before so he was the benchmark really.

The MGB and Midget guys were pushing hard too and it was interesting to watch and see how the different driver and car combo's took their lines.
Example; the F/TF's would turn almost on there nose then use brute power to almost power-slide out of the corners.
The B's etc looked a lot softer sprung and had to be driven far more smoothly than just point and squirt!!

You probably won't need to twist our arms, we usually run two events at North Weald every season. We don't have a confirmed date yet, but it will appear on the website as soon as it is confirmed.

To be in with the best chance of booking places at any of our events, why not register with MGoT and you will receive our e-mail newsletters that advertise opening dates for upcoming events. Register on http://www.mgs-on-track.com

Hope to see some of you at either North Weald or one of our other full track days.

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your input.
This really was a fantastic day today and all I can say is I wished I'd joined the party sooner!
Several of the guys I met have expressed their interest at doing another one.
Full trackdays are certainly on my agenda after a second go at a taster.

I think I'm registered for email updates but will sign in and check.
Dave P did mention there was talk of an extra date but it was TBC.

Look forward to an update :thumbsu:

Looking on their web site I see they actually have a track day that falls upon my birthday .................................... Hmmm wonder if I can wangle the time and funds ????????????????

Of course it's not local to me  .................................. but sounds fun.

Edit:- Just took a look at crash helmets and Geeeez don't know most of the makers names now. had to throw my old Centurion Firebird away as the lining had all fallen apart. Next time a, in town will pop into the bike shop and have a gander JIC.

That's is the crux of the matter .......................................... money. I am on the minimum that the Government says one requires to survive. Being a Non Professional full time carer that is what one gets. I will have to sell some bits and save as one track day is a week and halves money at least.
