Not really, the metro is subframe based and the Allegro a monocoque shell, the only thing they share really is that the track width is the same within about 5mm. The Allegro rear drums are the same as Austin 1100 so they have been around for some time, the metro ones are a redesign - the mounting bolts are probably a few mm different but I can alter the brackets. Fitting the front subframe has taken a lot of work and the front arb is mounted a couple of inches lower than it should be meaning I'm going to have to 'adjust' it with an oxy torch to clear the wishbones!

So the Metro may be "inspired by" but not "based upon" the Allegro? :)

BL would say they totally redesigned it :)

The Mini was the first real design breakthrough for BL with the use of the subframe I'd say?

Allegro was rather rushed so no such modern designs were used! When they replaced it with the Metro they used the subframe system, much easier to assemble.

The mgf subframe was a redesign of the mk1 a series metro subframe only bigger to house the K series, rover's saviour.

Made a start on the roll cage today. 3mm plates formed and welded to the sills, main hoop tacked in and one of the A pillar bars.

Going to take a few more weekends but a big part of the project is underway at last.

Floor fixed too!

Nice welding Ed - once complete, the roll cage should really tighten the car up. The Allegro was always renowned for being as torsionally stiff as a bowl of rice pudding. ;)

Cheers Rob it sure does need it! It will have bolt in front and rear braces too

A pillar bar tacked in, it'll go a bit more vertical once the windscreen bar is in place

Couple of bits for the rear anti roll bar turned up, will have to take the drums off again to fit the brackets, rear beam has to come off at some point though.

Image

Rubber bump stops will have to go, along with the rebound straps.

Image

Main roll cage frame done today and fully welded, next job is to clean the welds up a bit and paint the top before it goes back up, then the rest of the bars can be welded in.

Getting technical with some cad templates for rear arch boxes :) Can weld these to the folded steel on the arch seem which is double thickness.

Image

Cut some extra little bits for some triangulation and have got the door bars done. I'm getting good at doing these bird mounts by eye with the grinder, too much effort to use the drill although I will be drilling the harness bar next to take the threads for the eyelets.

Enjoying this thread, keep up the good work.

You may be interested in this one, the fabrication is amazing, especially in episode 5 and the new bulkead.

Thanks :) yeah binky is an amazing build, love the fully auto flip front some mad engineering. Have been a bit disappointed with the last 2 episodes though, not much progress in 6 months, bit like mine!

Nice job there Ed!

Yes, I love Project Binky. Really inspirational stuff! I agree that the last couple of episodes have not covered quite as much ground as the earlier ones, but I suspect knocking up the fuel tank and figuring out the intricacies probably involved a lot of hard thinks and cups of tea...

Lots of welding today, cage is all done appart from fitting the harness bar and the front bulkhead bar. Thats going to tie in with the subframe mounts.

Killed 1 t shirt today, caught fire grinding!

Image

Steel rear arch boxes welded in.

Image

Then the rest of the cage, its going to be tied into the top of the A pillar and B pillar too.

Roll cage is now pretty much done, just have to box in the legs. Added some fancy bits too to tie it to the shell. Harness bar is now in, fitting the bulkhead bar has taken most of today, that is attached to the rear of the subframe mounts.

Had to chop some off the frame to get the steering rack out, going to add a bolt in piece to close the gap but also allow the rack to come out. Chopped most the front off the frame, going to add box section to make it lower profile, also add bolts for towing eyes, a pair I think.

Good progress Ed - looking forward to seeing it in the flesh! The subframe has a bit of work left in it though?

Yep, got a big list to do while its out, redo the front, towing eye bolts, new section to cover the rack, struct brace mountings at the top of the towers.
Might be the last time its out now! Might get it powdercoated

Well I'd hoped on having an engine running by this summer but moving house and adding more changes to the car have taken up my time.

The subframe is now on something like version 4.6, it now has a reprofiled front bar, bolts for towing eyes, also a bolt in strut brace bar thats going to be extended to the wings later.

Image

Most of today was spent boxing in the feet of the cage, all it needs now is paint :)

Image

Image

Image

I also knocked up some seat frames and got the steering column remounted. Also got my Acewell bracket mounted, next jobs will be mount the pedals, fully weld the seat frames to the rails, subframe refit and front splitter can happen :) Might get to look at the rear beam at some point this year!
Oh and there is that rust to fix on the front end.
