Sheered Bolt. Rear subframe front mount bolt size?

Post by castingflame » Sun Apr 05, 2015 8:10 am

Well it's finally happened . . . . I sheered a bolt on the front on the rear subframe

I've had the whole of the front and rear suspension off fitting poly-bushes and dropped the front subframe without issue but changing handbrake cables was a f'in nightmare :x

All 4 of the rear subframe front mount bolts were a mess but I suppose I should be greatful that I managed to get 3 out of 4 out without sheering them or killing the heads. Got them out by hammering on a smaller socket.

I am going drill out the bolt and use a Helicoil (Recoil) insert. First time for everything . . . .

Better still I can get this one delivered Tuesday

The offending item is bolt No 12, Part number KYP10002L. Can anyone confirm that it's M8 1.25 pitch?

I guess Thursdays trip to the garage to get the tracking aligned will have to be postponed now . . . .

As Far as I remember it's an 8mm thread but you only need a tap not a helicoil kit just make sure you drill centre of the bolt and work your way up in size if you are slightly off you will see part of the thread show and normally you can pick the remains of the bolt out without doing any damage, a left handed drill is the real way to go max size is 6.5 - 6.8mm or you could be really unlucky like me and find when you push on the remains of the bolt it turns out the nut was only tack welded on one side and makes a bid for freedom......

and this wasnt the final "nut" just used this to work out what would fit and how as surgery was the last option.....

What is the remaining wall thickness if you tap an 8mm nut to take a helicoil ??? Not enough !!!

Deffo don't helicoil...

As said drill centre of bolt and tap to M8

Otherwise it's a cut and weld job..

The subframe mounts deffo need to be strong.. Not a time for half measures

Just remember to copper grease the new bolts going in.. And correct torque

Thanks everyone for your advice. I will cancel the Amazon order and get a tap and new bits. I'll let you know how it goes.

After buying a new power drill and cobolt bits I finally managed to get it drilled out. What a bl***y nightmare. I drilled ok up to 15mm then it turned to rock. I ended up with the power drill sitting on a scissor jack slightly under pressure. Good result in the end though using a 3 stage tap. Did it over 2 days last week.

Thank you all for your valuable advice, Paul
