Clock not working

Post by beefio » Thu May 14, 2015 6:55 pm

My clock keeps showing the wrong time and I've worked out that while I'm driving my F if I set the correct time it then works and keep the correct time, but when I turn the engine off even for 5 minutes then it stops keeping time. I've tested it several times and it does it every time.

Any ideas what the issue is?

I have another clock so can change it, but is this the actual clock or something else?

I've seen posts where disconnecting the clock then reconnecting it has cured this problem worth a try?

Clock not working

Post by beefio » Thu May 14, 2015 9:53 pm

Ok thanks Neil I will give that a go, or I may just switch it over for the replacement, I just didn't want to do that if the problem will persist with the new one...

On the MY2000 can you remove the clock by removing the central air vent, or do you have to remove the whole console?

Any decent how to guides on this?

To remove the centre console, first remove the radio then the gear knob, pull the console out of the spring clips. You can then get your hand behind to disconnect all the multi plugs on the switches and the wiring for the guages I took photos on my phone so I could get it all back together with no hiccups.
The console can now be removed and the clock is held in by a couple of self tappers, easy really 45 mins.

When you switch off does it run slower? Maybe a power supply problem.

I've been keeping an eye on the clock and it works fine when driving but run very slow when not.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

I would love to know, mine has done this on the VVC but the one in the MPi keeps perfect time.

It may not be linked but mine ran slowly until I replaced the battery. It now keeps time.

Hi beefio,

Mine has identical symptoms. It used to drive me mad. Now I just think, sod it. The car is used as a weekend toy. So who cares what time it is when your out playing.
If you get a solution pls let me know though. As it still niggles my OCD! ;)

Regards Jez

So I changed the clock over for the other used clock I had and I have also replaced the battery, but the clock is still slow!

What else could it be?

Could I have two faulty clocks?!

New ones are £80 so not keen to buy one...

To me this looks like higher resistance on clock circuit preventing correct current and voltage to the clock itself. It is worth to measure what voltage you have on clock connector in compare to voltage you have on car battery. If there is substantial difference, that might be culprit of a problem. Substantial difference could be even 0.5V.

Higher resistance could be because of corroded earth connection (C0556 on here http://forums.mg-rover.org/mgf-mgtf-%2A ... de-486097/), or within the earth header for this connection. But since access to that header is not so easy, worth to make easy checks first, like I said, voltage on clock connector in compare to voltage on car battery withouth starting the engine.

When you start the engine, alternator will provide higher voltage on car battery, thus higher voltage in circuit for clock, which might be enough for this higher resistance in circuit to provide enough power for clock to work as needed.

If you see this drop of voltage in circuit, as I expect, it is worth to investigate further. Measure voltage on Fuse 12 in passenger compartment fuse box, check quality of connection on mentioned earth point. If nothing of this helps, we can go further on this check with pins measures etc.

I was thinking of this myself, need to get the console out to have a look and test the voltage as you say...will report back!

My clock works, but you cant adjust the hour hand.

Both the minute and hour hands move, but you cant set the clock by moving the centre spindle adjuster.
